heels, sox & steelers

Gravatar Yeah, Maylock's tapes sure make a strong case for Albert. He won't be a sleeper pick for long.

Gravatar Kemo at LG...I don't think so. And yet people keep saying that is what is going to happen. Where is the mobility that you need? Does he have that lateral quickness? We know he has the power.

Not saying it can't or won't happen, Just kind of puzzled that he isn't already our RG.

Gravatar Signing other teams' cap casualties does seem to be the quickest way to improve the GCG problem, since draft picks rarely make a big impact in year one.

And Eddie B wrote: "Kemoeatu [is] likely to replace Faneca as the starting left guard." http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/0...1/856318- 66.stm

Gravatar So a guy who couldn't even unseat Kendall Simmons is going to take over for the best OL on the team? Not good at all.

Gravatar Rob D
I'm not puzzled, Kemo was a 5th round pick for a reason, he's basically not that good.

Gravatar My best friend, who is a KC fan, said this about Wiegmann: "yeah, he's good -- a solid player, not an all-pro but good. he's been with the chiefs awhile, was on the team when their line was great, and also on the team this year when it was so-so. in other words, playing with a couple of all-pro types, he can be part of a good line, but he's not so good that he can turn some mediocrities into a great line."

Gravatar I don't know, I'm not into signing another veteran mediocrity.

Gravatar Just read MMQB over at SI. King talks about the Steelers schedule and just how brutal it is. You guys have commented on it before, but it looks worse than I thought.

Gravatar I don't know, I'm not into signing another veteran mediocrity.

Cols714

Cols if you are refering to Mahan, he'd like to thank you for the compliment.

Gravatar Cols,

The thing is, every team in the AFC North has a ridiculous schedule, so there's that. Awesomely, the Pats' schedule doesn't look that bad.

Gravatar Yeah, that and the fact that every game will be against a good team makes watching the games more fun. There won't be too many weeks of playing bad teams where you just assume your team is going to win.

Gravatar Ah Presidents Day, where I can comment freely on HSS. I think the Steelers should probably take one of the top OT with their first round pick because of need(Marvel is gone after this year), the fact that this year's draft has many talented OTs, and because top OTs are usually found in the first round. That being said, taking a first round OT probably won't effect the team next year a heck of a lot. Even if they plug him into the RT position, chances are he wouldn't be that much better than Colon in 2008.
So how do the Steelers go about both strengthening their team for next year while at the same time plan for a Marvel-less (at least at LT) future?

Gravatar With respect to the schedule....Ric Flair used to say "If you want to be the man, you have to beat the man..." well men, there is no easy path to the Super Bowl. And let's face it the Pats defeated what 7 or 8 playoff teams this year?

Having said that though - there is no guarantee that those teams will be just as good next year - and Ryan is right - I like our chances better than anyone else in the AFC North versus that schedule.

Win the division as they say....

Gravatar Ryan--

Great, great job with the photograph.

Gravatar When you get a moment - check out MDS' article at Ryan's home away from home - it discusses this year's OT crop...

Gravatar I thought this useless football fact was too good not to pass along:

ryan | 02.18.08 - 3:01 pm | #

Holy understatement...we have the most difficult. The Pats are 32nd.

http://community.foxsports.com/ b...dule_Dissection

Gravatar Seems like every writeup on the draft is now stressing what a good one it is for OLine. Great. Does that mean all the more acclaimed ones are gone by our 2nd round pick? It scares me that they might not take O-line in the first, figuring that they will be able to wait until the 2nd.

Does anyone like my trade up scenario for this year. As in, get 2 picks closer together by moving up in the 2nd however they can? Probably not! LOL! I know we need all the picks we can muster, but I feel this intense need to get something NFL caliber along both lines..O-line starter and D-line QUALITY backup/situational rusher.

Somehow, I can't believe they are just going to use the draft to improve. Its not the Steeler way but this is their franchise QB`s health and well being we are dealing with here. Got to find something in FA or undrafted...and we know they do pull a Willie Parker out of the hat when least expected..Come on Steelers..do it again..

Gravatar I think Sam Baker would definitely fit. A top college LT from a great program, let's hope he makes it to Pittsburgh.

Gravatar According to ESPN, the Steelers for some reason re-signed Travis Kirschke to a 2 year 2 million or so deal.
Why?

Gravatar First Simmons. Now Kirschke. You gotta wonder why.

http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/ 0...id=steelers.xml

Gravatar This is where the money goes, to mediocre at best veterans. When you think of the waste of money re-signing Simmons and actually going out an signing Mahan, you can see why the Steelers can't afford (cap wise, not money wise) to re-sign Faneca. These deals add up you know.

Gravatar Ryan
Can you use your connections (Wexell) to find out if the Steelers plan on using Stapleton at center next year?

Gravatar Well, the Pats are offering a contract to Zach Thomas....At least the guys the Pats sign are former Pro Bowl level talents who make up in guile and football IQ what they lack in youth, speed and dexterity. Seau, Harrison, Bruschi, Vrable, Z.Thomas?

I don't see how Kirschke earns this salary. I would rather have some fire breathing youth at that position. Shouldn't we be trying to spell our aging D-line a bit more with youngish talents?

Errrr..little problem of not having much in the way of "youngish talents"...never mind..wink

Gravatar If Wiegmann was 31, his age wouldn't be so much of an issue, but he turns 35 this summer. Still, a one- or two-year deal, if he would accept that, at the right price couldn't hurt.

Gravatar Scott..yep, he's an oldster. But they have so badly mishandled the position that they have to grasp at straws.

Unusual for the Steelers who I think generally make sound decisions on personnel. I am giving them a mulligan. I am sure they will be overjoyed to hear of it.. lol..

Gravatar It's not that Kirschke is a bad player, it's that players like him can be found who are younger and much much cheaper. It's wasteful to spend money on players who are easily replaced. Like subpar backup DEs.

Gravatar As much as I don't like re-signing Kirschke, we're not talking about a huge amount of money here--about $1 million a year for two years according to Clayton plus a signing bonus.

http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/ ne...ce=NFLHeadlines

Gravatar The problem with the schedule cf the rest of the division, basically, is that we get to play New England and San Diego while the Browns get Buffalo and Denver.

w00t.

Gravatar Good lord, I don't know where I read that Weigmann is 31. If he's 35, forget about it. The Steelers would be better off getting Jeff Hartings to un-retire.

Cols,

Word on the street is that Stapleton will compete for the job in camp. Personally, I'm guessing the Steelers were well aware of Mahan's suckiness last year, but didn't want to upset the apple cart midseason (Wex has mentioned in the past that coaches are historically slow to make changes, particularly midseason AND when you're talking about inserting a rookie.)

Concerning Kirshke, I'm with Randy. Look, they can still cut the guy in training camp if he's injured or whatever. And not only that, who's better at that price? It's a two-year, $2 million deal. Re-signing Kirshke isn't preventing the Steelers from making any other deals, I'm pretty sure.

Gravatar Men...it's all about the small things in life. I just arrived at my hotel here in Indianapolis - and requested the Room Key that stated 'NFL Scouting Combine 2008 - Reebok' on it....

As they say - it's a keeper....

Gravatar SteelerBill, have fun... I look forward to your dispatches from the field.

Ditto on Kirschke, who seems like a ok back-up and is basically as expensive as Kreiwaldt at LB. The signing bonus was only $300k. That's not going to break the bank.

Gravatar It'd certainly be nice if the coaches think Stapleton can play, that would solve one of our biggest problems.

Gravatar Hey, a four-round mock draft. I like the first-round pick, but there will be riots if any of the other three selections happen in reality.

Gravatar Holy hell is that a bad mock draft. A FS, a WR, and a QB? Are they nuts?

Gravatar And on Kirschke, it's not a bad signing overall, but when you can get that type of performance for minimum wage, why waste the dollars?

Gravatar Riot indeed.

Gravatar AFC North discussion at FO:

http://www.footballoutsiders.com...our-downs/6116/

Gravatar It is refreshing to read something that makes sense (FO) when so much stuff is just crazy talk (like that mock draft).

Gravatar First siting here in Indy - the Jags Scouting Department.

How do I know? Easy, they are flying the colors.

Strangely enough, I got held while trying to get to the elevator...

No call was made..

Gravatar ELSM,

Ilanin wrote Four Downs: AFC North for FO. We're taking over.

Gravatar Ilanin = Stuart Fraser?

Gravatar Lordy, that was an ugly mock!

Yes, R1 will most likely be an OT, but OG Brandon Albert is intriguing, and perhaps more versatile than the OTs that will be available at 1.23.

R2 will probably be a DE, if a decent prospect is available.

Day 2: R3, 4, 5 will include a guard or center, a tall wide receiver, and a running back.

Why a running back? The Steelers only have Parker, Davenport, and Russell as RBs, and the coaches didn't hand the ball to Russell much last season. So we're short a running back, especially if Willie isn't 100 per cent. In fact, if Willie isn't his usual wonderful self, we'll be in deep doo-doo.

Why a wide receiver? No, not because Ben is begging for a tall one, but because we're in a precarious spot there, too.
Ward and Holmes are the only locks. Stone Hands Washington is a RFA, but he will probably be kept.

Cedric Wilson is in the last year of his contract and Willie Reid is most likey a bust, which I hate to admit. That means we're short one wide receiver, too.

Gravatar Yes, I'm Stuart Fraser. I used to be Ilanin at FO, too, but Aaron Schatz prefers the staff to use their real names, so when I became staff I switched.

Randy, I mostly agree with your assesment, though there may be a safety somewhere in that draft class too, if one isn't signed in free agency.

The problem is that all the free agents available in areas the Steelers are interested in suck, mostly. I was hoping we'd get Stacy Andrews, but...

No, I still don't understand why the hell the Bengals felt the need to franchise their backup RT.

Gravatar QFT (Question For Tomorrow): How many of Ryan's Draft Rules can you name? Extra Credit: How many of those rules should the Steelers break this year?

I'll pick some of the low fruit: You can't have too many good CBs. And RBs are expendable. Those are the only two I (think I) know.

And remember last year's Rule #1: Sepulveda. Good that it was followed, or shoulda been broken?

Gravatar > Yes, I'm Stuart Fraser. I used to be Ilanin at FO, too, but Aaron Schatz prefers the staff to use their real names, so when I became staff I switched.

The proper English (UK English I mean) verb conjugations gave you away... good work Ilanin.

Gravatar Stuart, how, being from the UK, did you go from cricket to becoming such a big (American) football fan that you write for FO? I have a hard time imagining doing the reverse. Is there even an FO equivalent for cricket?

http://www.toothycat.net/wiki/wi...pl? StuartFraser

Gravatar Well the Texans have released these guys: C Drew Hodgdon and C Mike Flanagan.

Not that I think picking over the Texans offensive line leavings is a strategy for success but, well, we're pretty much screwed at center.

If anybody knows, or knows anybody who knows, anything about these guys I'd like to hear it.

Gravatar According to the Post the Steelers have placed the transition tag on Starks. I guess that means he's a keeper! This may also mean that Marvel Smith's back may be worse than we all fear.

I don't have a problem with signing him as a stop gap while the drafted OTs/OGs learn how to play in the NFL. That usually takes a season or two.

Gravatar The Starks' deal sounds pricey. Yet another reason not to expect the Steelers to sign any big-time free agents this year.

Gravatar Men....I'm back from Indy - the only thing I can report is that Robert Smith likes Caramel Machiatto's from Starbucks. I looked for Coach Tomlin, but did not see him....

Robert Smith stood in a group of guy's all as big as a house, surrounding one very nervous looking dude discussing the 'weigh in'. I have decided that I need to purchase a Louis Vitton laptop bag though..

Gravatar PFT.com doesn't like the Steelers move to franchise Starks - and they have the Steelers taking a DT in the First Round - not the first time I've heard that.

Gravatar SteelerBill,

Cool! We even have reporters on the scene for HSS now!

Gravatar With regard to Starks, what choice did they have really? They have no depth, some very shaky starters and we know how much they LOVE making a big splash in FA. Its come down to this..paying Max top 10 money (shudder)when, IMHO (stress on the humble, now!)he is a spot starter/backup at best.

But they really had to do it. Onwards and upwards...

Gravatar Speaking of onward and upward, I'd like to take this moment to congratulate my Fire Controlman compatriots that shot down the Satellite of Doom. Makes me proud to be one . We can all sleep soundly now... well, unless the Steelers draft a WR in the first round.

Gravatar Sepulverizer - I echo that sentiment - nice work fellas.

One question though - if Ben had time in the pocket could he have knocked it down himself?

Gravatar I think Starks is a good move, if not a sexy one. He can be dominant at times. I got the feeling he played really well when he moved back into the starting lineup.

If we draft WR in the first round I'm gonna buy a Ray Lewis jersey. Yeah that Ray Lewis...

Gravatar Good article (once again) by Jim Wexell at SCI.com about who the Steelers will be looking at this weekend:

http://pit.scout.com/2/730757.html

Gravatar I would think the franchising of Starks makes it less likely the Steelers will take an OT in the 1st round.

Gravatar Can the punter play center? He really couldn't be worse than Mahan.

Re: Starks - I mostly agree with PFT's take on the transition tag, but I do think there is marginal value in it, because Starks might be happy to get that kind of cash for one year, because his per-year average is certainly going to be a good bit lower.

Gravatar I would think the franchising of Starks makes it less likely the Steelers will take an OT in the 1st round.

I don't agree, unless they're thinking of playing Starks as permanent LT, which is beyond inane. If RT, then we still need a franchise LT. A few good spot-fill games at LT does not Ben's protector make.

Also, the transition tag is monumentally stupid unless we're reserving the right to use the franchise tag as well, which would seem to indicate we'd be using it on Red. And that itself would be a cap-waste unless we negotiate some extension (same with Starks, of course).

This has the makings of either some very smart FO moves or some really, really, really stupid FO moves. I'll reserve judgment for now.

But either way, we still need a LT we know can hold up for 16 games against speed rushers, which I am not convinced Max can. 19 games, optimistically.

Best case scenario:

Cut Mahan, negotiate a deal with Red to play center. Throw Kemo and Kendall into a LG death duel. Starks at RT. Smith at LT until the R1 guy can take it. Colon at RG and RT backup. Use a second OL draft pick on someone like Cousins who could be a RT/OG swingman as well.

Gravatar Crikey, only the first para was supposed to be italicized. Appy polly loggies.

Gravatar JJ Cooper also thinks this means the Steelers are more likely to take an OT in the 1st two rounds of the draft because it makes Colon a guard.

Gravatar > Also, the transition tag is monumentally stupid unless we're reserving the right to use the franchise tag as well, which would seem to indicate we'd be using it on Red.

Well, a team can only use one or the other of the franchise and transition tags, so the franchise tag is gone unless the Steelers reach a deal with Starks (or lose him to another team by failing to match an offer) and retain the tag.

I've said all along that I don't see the Steelers using the franchise tag on Faneca, and this merely seals it.

Gravatar I'm surprised they broke out even the transition tag. It's not the Rooney way to restrict players, even if it's a competitive disadvantage for the organization. However, if they were going to use a tag, I'm a bit surprised they used the transition tag for all of the reasons PFT and others have mentioned.

Gravatar Just read the PFT item on Starks. They seem to be talking out both sides of their ass-- the Steelers made a bad decision in using any tag on Starks instead of on Faneca, but because they didn't use the full franchise tag on Starks and because no other teams may decide to come forward with an even more ridiculous offer (with poison pill included), there must be collusion involved. Huh? I think Starks will be quite happy making almost $7M next season. If the NFLPA needs to make a collusion case, I think they need a better test case than that of one Max Starks, heretofore backup offensive tackle. Not to mention that the Steelers are doing longtime veteran Faneca a favor in not playing hardball with him instead...

I think saving the $550K on Starks in applying only the transition tag simply represents a calculated risk, with the Steelers saying, hey, we know full well that the $6.895M is likewise too much; however we're in a bind but will go no further.

Gravatar I think it's batshit crazy to pay Max Starks $7 million next season.

Just my $.02 of course.

Gravatar Just saw this for the first time. (Maybe this is old hat for the rest of you.) Makes the Steelers look very good.

http://www.footballoutsiders.com.../ drivestats.php

Gravatar I'm probably naive to think this, but if the Steelers management thinks Starks is worth that much money, they may know something I don't know.

Anyone know what our cap room looks like?

Gravatar Wasn't the transition tag what allowed the Vikings to 'steal' Steve Hutchinson from the Seahawks?

Sepulverizer, SteelerBill - the general sentiment here at ESOC Flight Dynamics seems to be that the risk of a hydrazine tank deorbiting in one piece and poisoning people is far smaller than the risk of a huge cloud of debris damaging or destroying another spacecraft (Yes, I'm aware that it is about people in the first case). Looking at face value, one could easily think that this has been a lucky opportunity for an additional system test that the USN gladly took.

Gravatar The Steelers cap room was previously about $18.6M for 43 contracted players (per Ilanin's AFC North report on FO-- also the published number at the last salary cap report date I believe). Starks's transition tag number would eat up over 35% that space alone.

What the Steelers know but we might not (but actually do) is that they're desperate on the OL. Still, I'm a bit surprised they wouldn't go after one of these recent cut casualties around the league, which would come cheaper than this move, I'd think. But this may be a preference to stay inside the system with a known albeit mediocre quantity.

Gravatar Three questions that I'll need answered before I can really assess the Starks deal:

- Exactly how hurt is Marvel? What's been made public about the injury?

- Wasn't he pretty good, or at least above average, when healthy? I seem to remember (and I may be wrong) through the first half of the season talking about how the Steelers have one quality o-lineman (Marvel) and that we needed to replace the rest.

- Chances anyone comes over the top and makes Max an offer?

I do have to say I was pretty shocked, for whatever that's worth.

Gravatar There is an article by John Clayton at ESPN that ranks the top 5 drafting teams . The Steelers rank 4th. Not much to argue about, however I do think the Patriots get too much credit for the draft and I would put the Chargers at #1 .
Link:
http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/dr...john& id=3252721

Gravatar Since Colbert has stated that we would like to sign Starks to a long term deal, it probably means that he is going to start either at LT or RT. Considering that he looked much better at LT than RT last year, what are the chances that Marvel is moving back to RT next year?

Gravatar Stuart, how, being from the UK, did you go from cricket to becoming such a big (American) football fan that you write for FO? I have a hard time imagining doing the reverse. Is there even an FO equivalent for cricket?

Cricket and (American) Football have more in common than you might think, other than that both are played in large amounts of protective gear and feature stop-start action. Cricket is an exceedingly tactical game, with the placement of fielders for each individual bowlers and batsman (and which bowlers to employ, and a batsman's shot selection) being dependent on both the styles of the players involved and the game situation - and like football, you're playing the clock as well as the opposition.

Though to be fair the way I originally got into (American) football was that the highlights show was on between the English football league highlights and the Italian football league highlights and it was something to watch.

Also, aaargh, I'm being googled.

Gravatar I seriously hope that what the Steelers know, that we don't, is they're going to replace their grass with actual freshly produced mud spraypainted green for every home game. That way, Max Starks is a pro bowl tackle 8 games out of the year.

Gravatar Didn't Starks also play well in the dome at St. Louis?

Gravatar What the Steelers know? Their OL is bus meat. But...

Simmons might be a good center.

Starks might be a good LT.

Kemoeatu might do well if given more than a game here and there to play. His knock in college was discipline (he has a temper), not ability. Personally I like mean OLmen.

I think Smith is the player that was on the decline, not Starks. And I think Starks will do well at LT. And I can only guess that is what the Steelers are thinking too. I also think Faneca was overrated (except in run blocking...he is a mauler). But again, I don't watch hours of film.

Gravatar I guess I have to keep forcing myself to forget that the very same front office and coaching staff making this decision were the ones that demoted Max Starks in favor of Willie Colon (no Pro Bowler himself) in training camp.

Seriously, where is this thinking coming from that Starks might be a good LT when he wasn't a good RT? Don't the league's best pass-rushers go up against the LT? Starks is quicker in one direction than the other? I can't be terribly convinced by a decent performance against the Rams, etc. DJ had it right; the plan must be for more games in the mud...

Gravatar LT was the position he played in college, and whether you believe it or not, Starks did play well as an LT in the games he started last season. I still don't think that giving a career backup OL who couldn't beat out Colon last year 7 million is a good idea.

Gravatar I misread the info on T-tags. So we can't F-tag Faneca; this is our big gambit. Some have suggested we're testing other teams' interest (in other words, not over-paying by simply matching). And of course, I doubt we're paying Maxie the batshit $7M: they'll work out a multi-year that's more cap friendly.

OK. Fine. If he's going to RT.

I am not buying Max as our starting LT. Somehow, he looked like bus meat at LT until a brief and notable bout of spot duty there when Marvel got hurt. Does that translate to 16+ games of protecting Ben's blind side? My take? He'll get eaten alive by speed rushers. He's a proto slow-footed big boy, which is to say, a RT. Move Colon inside. Figure out who we can draft to succeed Marvel, and do something about the greasy spot. You know the one. The greasy spot where the dead horse we've all been beating used to be? Right between the guards.

Gravatar Ouch, $7 million is a freakin' lot of money for Max Starks, who too often has played like Minimum Starks.

But isn't it nice to have a couple options along the O-line now? Imagine the free-for-all if he hadn't be tagged. To lose both Starks and Faneca would have been brutal. (The Steelers may feel more at ease to pursue Brandon Albert in the draft now, too.)

But again, this move pretty much kills any chance the Steelers have to sign any significant free agents. (Not that they ever were going to...)

Gravatar Max Starks lost his job to Willie Colon last August, and now he's in a position to possibly make $7 million in 2008? I don't care how well he played against St. Louis or in mop-up duty against Jacksonville in one half, that's silly.

Between that, Mahan, and Simmons, the Steelers have thrown a lot of money at some inconsistent - err - bad offensive lineman.

Yeah, it's nice to have options, but it doesn't mean much if all of those options suck.

Gravatar (Sigh)

Gravatar I hope they have a continuous loop of all the sacks and pressures Ben endured last year running at their offices.

And then go to the draft with a fierce dedication to substantially improve along the line..

I would love to hear what the O-line coach really thinks about the talent level he has to work with. It can't be very realistic to look at it and say "championship level talent right here"

Nothing is insurmountable but this situation really wears on me. Steeler teams are often judged by the strength of their O-lines. The media still can't seem to get with the idea that we aren't very good there anymore. Must have choked on so many coffees during the year when someone like Dierdorf would say "its time for that power running attack the Steelers have used for years to take over this game"

sheessh..

Gravatar Kevin Colbert was on Sirius NFL Radio - he stated that the Steelers had discussions with Starks and Faneca's 'people'.

After those conversations they believed that it would be much easier to sign Starks to a long term deal.

Gravatar I am like most on the list; losing Faneca is bad but probably not avoidable considering the dollars involved. Its just the timing that couldn't be worse. He's exactly the kind of savvy vet we need during this transition time. I guess Marvel is our senior guy now and we wonder if he is going to be around with that back of his (shades of Hartings and his problems)

After that? Leadership is not really there. Its going to take a while to develop the necessary cohesion. I don't know if Colon is a good guard, if Simmons will ever retrieve his early promise, can Kemo find a position, will the Steelers find true love and will Monique reveal her closeted secret to the world?

Stay tuned..its coming up next on..as the Steelers turn...

Gravatar Ok, so I'm the lone guy not worried about the Starks thing... please let me stay!

What is your take on Mike Pollack? I like Albert because he appears to abuse people, but Pollack is supposed to be a really hard worker, etc. He's also smaller (lighter) and might make a good center. Thoughts?

Gravatar Men....I'll need your help with this one.

Last night my wife and I sit down and I put on NFL Total Access live from the Combine of course.

During the course of said show we, as you well know, get to see the future NFL Stars paraded around in their underwear..

To which SteelerDawn comments:

"Why do we need to see this?"

My response: "Well, look at all the guys there, they need to see these guys before they make a major investment. There is a big difference between the big fat guy's and true athletes - plus they need to see room for improvement, growth etc..."

Her response? "But why do YOU need to see this, you're not hiring them..."

Gravatar Speaking of the Draft - let the smokescreen begin:

http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/0...3/859551- 66.stm

Gravatar I hate it when they ask logical questions, SteelerBill...

Gravatar > "Why do we need to see this?"

A most erudite response, SteelerBill. I believe this was your cue to change the channel (unless your wife was enjoying the players modeling their underwear).

Fortunately or unfortunately I no longer have access to the NFL Network...

Gravatar Uh-oh... Kevin Colbert says that the Steelers are going the "best player available" route:

"The Steelers will pick the best player available when it is their turn in April's NFL draft.

"That's not exactly a stunning revelation because many teams take the "best player available" approach. But Steelers director of football operations Kevin Colbert said yesterday it is a welcome change in their approach from years past when they went into the draft focused on filling specific needs.

"Colbert said the roster is stable and has few, if any, obvious holes at any position, so the Steelers have a lot more flexibility with their pick."

http://www.postgazette.com/pg/08...3/859551- 66.stm

Gravatar Someone else made the point up-thread, but it needs to be re-stated. The Steelers have now committed a lot of money to Starks, Mahan, and Simmons. That is not a good allocation of resources.

Gravatar The Steelers have now committed a lot of money to Starks, Mahan, and Simmons. That is not a good allocation of resources.

The contracts for Mahan and Simmons are really not that big. They only seem that way because they both suck to the point where they should be paying the Steelers.

Gravatar Eric,
That's the point, wasting money on below average players is not the way to go. Especially when you are losing the best guard on your team because you can't pay him.

Gravatar Be quite the statement if Tomlin axed Mahan outright. Or Simmons. Or both.

Sean Mahan couldn't block barely quivering busmeat.

Gravatar QOTD
Would you rather see the Steelers take whatever OT is left out of the big 5, or the 1st OG in the 1st round?

Gravatar "Colbert said the roster is stable and has few, if any, obvious holes at any position, so the Steelers have a lot more flexibility with their pick."

Yep, just like we have been saying..
sighhhhhh..

Gravatar Re: QOTD

OT, for the same theory as the draft where Ben was taken at #12. Specifically, how often is a top OT going to be available where the Steelers will (hopefully) be picking? OG, yes. OT, less likely.
