Hey Ryan, will you try and pull out a "Sepulveda-Stunt" this year too ? Some rather unknown player, just known for maybe on remarkable skill, crazy haircut or mad poker skillz ? Ending up in steelers uniform in your dream and being picked up in the draft in Round 5 ?
Greetings, MaG (Germany)

I don't post much, but I read the threads all the time. I am totally in for scouting some college games. Thursday is my last day of work until January, so I will have plenty of time to watch (and possibly tape and re-watch) games. I watch Steelers games with HSS-er "mike," so maybe I can get him into it as well.
Anyway, I'm in for scouting bowl games (and writing up overly long reports). It's a great idea.

St. Louis is according to FO the 2nd worst team in the NFL (before last weekend) with the 30th ranked offense overall and 26th ranked pass offense. I don't think Marc Bulger, at least given the talent surrounding him, is capable of giving any team fits right now.
Honestly, thinking about it, I think this short week helps us. A shorter week minimizes the impact of coaching intervention, and makes the relative player talent levels of both teams more important. Regardless of whether you think the Pittsburgh coaching staff is better or worse than that of the Rams, its pretty clear that Pittsburgh is a more talented team, personnel-wise, than the Rams, even banged up as we are. Ergo, short week, advantage Steelers.
We then have a long week, with 3 extra days over the Ravens for game planning and resting up our guys. The Ravens aren't a good team (-8.0% DVOA, good for 20th in the league, BEFORE losing to Miami), and with the extra three days... well, if we can't beat a team as awful as the Rams with both teams on a short week, then use the 3-day advantage to beat a poor team like the Ravens, we don't deserve to be in the playoffs.

How bad has this network become that Mark Schlereth has THEORIES on celebrities watching football games? Just pulled this from ESPN.com's Power Rankings re: the Rams...
Memo to the NFL: The Rams would like you to eliminate the third and fourth quarters. This season, the Rams have been outscored 217-76 in the second half. In 10 of their 14 games, they've been held to three points or less after halftime.

QOTD: Biggest Pro-Bowl surprise? IMO, that Minnesota has both starting DTs has to be up there. Not that they don't deserve it, but the Vikings don't seem like they'd have the biggest "I'm voting 1,000,000 times for each of my team's starters" fanbase, plus structural factors that would seem to suggest players and coaches wouldn't vote for two players at the same position from the same team like that.

Here's another Question of the Day:
If Pitt's Darrell Revis had still be available to the Steelers during the last draft, would you have preferred that they chose him instead of Lamar Woodley, even though the Steelers didn't need a cornerback?
My answer? Yes. I'm one of those nuts who think that most of the time you should draft the best player available regardless of position because the truth is you never know when and where a need will arise.
Sure there are exceptions. Obviously we won't be drafting a quarterbacks in the first or second rounds. (But if Joe Flacco is available late round three, how can you say no?)
We have been harping here about the Steelers' offensive lines' woes for at least a couple years. The thing is, high draft picks don't guarantee great results, especially on the O-line. And because those picks are so expensive, they can do lots of damage to a team's salary cap.
Look at the Jets' first round choices two drafts ago of D'Brickashaw Ferguson and Nick Mangold. Maybe they'll work out someday, but this season particularly, the Jets' O-line has been woeful. I'm not saying those guys are busts, but given the amount of salary cap they are consuming, it puts the Jets' front office in a terrific bind when trying to solve other problems.
My point? Trying too hard to fill a need causes teams to draft mediocre players too high. If the Steelers rush pell mell to try to plug holes in their O-line, there's a good chance they'll make some costly mistakes.
When drafting high, you should choose a player you think has the best chance of succeeding in the NFL, whether or not they fill an immediate need. In the modern era of the salary cap, any other strategy is foolish, I think.

|
Just say no to Bowe. Ben Grubbs, I'm listening.
Randy, totally agree that teams shouldn't stretch to fill needs, and I'm generally against trading up. And the great thing about taking an offensive linemen in every round is that the Steelers won't have to reach for a player. If he's not there, somebody will be available a round later. That's the beauty of an o-line-only draft board.

Congratulations to the Pittsburgh Pro-Bowl class of 2007! Great to see Ben in there; some well-deserved recognition for this warrior of a quarterback. I am so proud he is a Steeler! I'm also very happy Willie made the cut. I was worried that he might get left off, because everyone seems to be saying that his YPC are not all the best, yadda, yadda, yadda. Let's not forget that Willie has run his way to the top of the rushing leaderboard with little help from a disintegrating offensive line. Not to mention he has had to run through two swamps and a blizzard. Get this guy the ball in the flat more often (as we seem to have slightly realized the past couple of weeks), and will rip off 10-15 yard runs, with the potential of any run being taken to the house! Honestly, I think this offense with Ben and Willie has the potential to be very exciting for years to come if we start to fill in some of the pieces around them.
I was pretty happy with the Steelers pro-bowl representation, although I thought Faneca and Polamalu got in on reputation alone.
Harrison definitely deserved his spot, and I don't think we will see the last of him in Hawaii. In fact, I see JH becoming the leader that this defense so desperately needs. My only complaint was that I thought Jeff Reed deserved more consideration. I think he has only missed two field goal attempts all year: a 65 yarder that would have set an NFL record, and a kick in which the bottom third of the ball was plugged into a swamp. He's hit some clutch kicks, and is nearly automatic in the infamous Pittsburgh whirlwinds. I don't even know the kicker from Tennessee who evidently made it. I didn't realize until today that there are no backups taken for kickers. Kinda stinks.

I agree that there are no guarantees with 1st round picks, however, don't forget that on the 2005 team, our offensive line was 2nd, 1st, 1st, 1st, 3rd round picks (Smith, Faneca, Hartings, Simmons, and Starks.) I read an article a few years back about the "safest" #1 picks, and DL and OL were the safest (think Joe Greene and Orlando Pace), where QB was pretty NOT safe (Ryan Leaf?)
There are no guarantees with high picks, but All-America Offensive line players are pretty close to locks. Even Simmons was rookie starter, but of course, his play his has slipped.
I think if the Pro Bowl vote happened now you might not see so many Steelers. But I am giddy to have the 25 year old Ben Roethlisberger as our QB.

JB, this might be Tomlin's way to send a signal to Mr. Smith to get his head together. Hitting like a truck is not enough. As you said, he's still going to play a lot.
Also, we've been 1 or 2 in FO's variance score for most of the year. This cuts both ways. When we play or C or D game, anyone can beat us. When we play our A game, we can beat anyone. Although the performance and injuries of the last 5 weeks have been discouraging, momentum can change quickly and go in either direction. It needs to start with snotknocking the Rams...

I know Haggans is a warrior, but I would just as well he tutor Woodley from the sideline. Heal up, dude. Fortunately I don't get paid to make those decisions, though.
As for the scouting, I'll always keep my eyes peeled, but I am tired of the 57 bowl games played... it's like trophies for 9th place. Make it a playoffs (like D2 and D3) and I might be more interested. Gentlemen and lady,
This may be the key to the game (in caps):
"The Steelers count on a stingy defense that's ranked first in the NFL and allows 16.7 points per game, tied for the fewest. They've gone two games without a sack, but have two shutouts and have limited six opponents to 10 or fewer points.
The Rams are a good candidate to become team No. 7. HAMPERED BY AN OFFENSIVE LINE MINUS THREE STARTERS, the area hit hardest on a team with 11 players on injured reserve, St. Louis was blanked in the second half by the Packers and 10 times have scored in the teens or worse."
-from the Trib-Review
David |

|
|
I`m with everyone who wants Woodley out there. He hasn't looked out of place and actually has the ability to not just rush the passer, but put the passer on his ample butt. (I added ample just to piss off Bulger)
Remember Bettis on one leg against the Patriots? That was simultaneously a courageous effort and also something that was really futile.
You know what? This game is huge. They have to get SOME momentum back and in the game to follow, do not want the Ravens to have the same motivation we had last year in beating the Bengals and knocking them out of the post season.
I rewatched Ravens/Patriots and they had that game won. Any team can be fiercesome if they have some powerful thing to play for. That includes the Steelers who must get their mojo back fast. Mr. Tomlin, show us what you can get out of these guys.
Rob D |
12.19.07 - 1:05 pm | #

OK, here are our scenarios, looking forward (sorry SteelerBill):
Wk 16:
-Win + CLE loss = clinch AFC North
-Win or tie + TEN tie = clinch Wildcard
-TEN loss = clinch WC
Wk 17:
-Win = clinch WC (regardless of win/loss vs. STL)
David |
12.19.07 - 1:13 pm | #
|
|
So, David, if we go 10-6 with the win against Baltimore, we're beating Baltimore in any tie? Is that correct?
Great points above from ELSM and Rob D, by the way. I hope this gets A-Bizzle's attention. And the '01 AFCC example is a good one, and one that I keep forgetting because I couldn't watch that game and only listened to the second half on the radio (don't ask).

Over at FO, Bill Barnwell picks the Steelers as one of his best bets, FWIW.
"Pittsburgh (-7.5) over ST. LOUIS
OK, so Pittsburgh hasn’t looked that great the last few weeks. They’ve dropped to eighth in DVOA. That being said, they’re being hurt a little by their DVOA from the Dolphins game, which wasn’t representative of anything, and they’ve lost two games to two of the best teams in football the last two weeks. I’m not that concerned about them. They’ll blow the Rams out. "
Cols714 |
12.19.07 - 2:24 pm | #
|
|
I haven't seen the Rams play this year. How can they be so awful on offense with a great RB, excellent (if aging) receivers and a decent QB? Injuries must contribute to it, but that still seems odd. I hope my gut turns out to be as irrational as my nervous feeling before the Ravens game, which was also based more on 2006 and before than 2007.

David |
12.19.07 - 2:37 pm | #

ELSM,
If my understanding is correct, STL has been decimated with injuries, especially to the O-line (44 sacks given up). Although we've given up 43, Bulger 1) has been pounded, and 2) isn't as good as Ben outside the pocket running for his life.
Look at their last game:
Comp-Att 20-39
Yards Per Pass 4.4
Sacked-Yards Lost 4-28
Therefore, IMO, the key to the game is our LBs getting pressure/sacks, which should theoretically be easier than in games past.

Yes, we just don't force turnovers. Frankly I'd rather be 10th in yards allowed and 2nd in turnover differential than the other way around. I actually like Nick Lachey more than Jessica. And I'm not even kidding. Drew's second.

Wow, I didn't think seeing Porter do the "Who ride" thing would bother me... but it kind of did.

Furious 98 degrees debating aside (Justine Jeffre!), you got me thinking, Ryan -- how much of your aol stuff is mandated by the "higher ups"? (I mean subject matter, not, you know, actual content)?

I just want to wish you all a nice game. Won´t be around, will look the game at my friends house, who is a big Rams Fan.
We have to work tomorrow and get up early, still we get up at 2 am to watch it at 2:15 until 5:30, and then go to work at 6.
Yes, we´re quite nuts
If we win, its ONLY because I`ll switch my jerseys that I wear when I watch games. The games after the Ravens-blowup I was wearing my proud warriors jersey of Fuamatu Ma´Afala (told you about that a few weeks ago). Steelers never played up to their expectations, could not run or block, and injuries piled up.
Lets see if I´ll switch to Pete Gonzales again, which I was wearing during the superbowl-season ...
All the best,
MaG (Germany)

Mike,
I'd say about .01 percent of what I write comes by request. If it's something fluffy, chances are, the higher-ups called for it. At least that's what I tell people.

R-Dubs --
My pleasure.
For what it's worth, I'm pulling the Pittsburgh double-whammy tonight, going to Pitt-Duke at the Garden (both are undefeated, and Duke is obviously especially hated on this board) and catching the second half of the game at a bar.
I think it's safe to say that losing tonight (Steelers, not Pitt) would be pretty disastrous. Not to be a Debbie Downer or anything.

Coupla things....
* I will be at my buddy's tonight watching the game as well - thus not on here until later
* In response to this article, I say "So what? I don't want to be number 3, I want to be number 1"

Men and Sarah of course....
Take a look at ESPN's pre-season predictions...
Please note the only one to pick the Steelers to win the division:

Duke sucks.
You are correct, Sarah. Alba or Biel way over Simpson.
SteelerBill, for the record, I picked us to win the North. Of course, I pick us to win the SB every year, too.
MaG & Israel, you both are a testament to why the Steelers and Steeler fans rule the NFL: we have a worldly presence.
I even heard, with apologies to Ellis Hobbs, that the Man upstairs is a Steeler fan.
If that's the case, how about us serving up some SACRIFICIAL RAM TONIGHT, BABY!

While we're at it, let's make it a three way victory, Pitt, Steelers, and Penguins who are in Boston tonight.
Speaking of Boston Hockey, I happened to catch Best of This is Sportscenter last night. They were showing some of the funniest Sportscenter commercials of all time. Does anyone remember the Cam Neely commercial where a fan is talking to him while he's gardening? I can't remember how the entire commercial went, but at the end he says, "ESPN Came out with a 24 hour sports news network.... That's really going to help MY career... look at me now... Gardening!.... why don't you just kick my dog while you're at it..." Priceless!

Bill Parcells..How does he get away with it? He's like that girl in high school who lets you believe she might say yes to your offer of a date.
And then turns you down in front of as many people as possible for maximum embarrasment and crushed ego.
Not that it ever happened to me of course..Just to my..ahhh..friend..

Speaking of Merril....I just read his blog from today - this sounds strange but would not surprise me - in his discussion of FWP he states
"With the Steelers offensive line struggling with pass blocking, I’m surprised they do not call more runs back to back. Last week only one time did they Steelers call runs back to back. There is no way that should ever happen with Willie...."

Hey,, in the embedded video on this page http://tinyurl.com/2peyjg..right near the end of it..some big guy says all the Steelers have to do to win tonight is to play "smashmouth football"
I`m not familiar with this term. I watch the 2007 version of the Steelers..wink
