heels, sox & steelers

There is nothing worse than MLB fans getting pissed about players their teams drafted. At least in the NFL most of us have seen the players the Steelers drafted and can offer some sort of criticism that is a small part informed.

The MLB draft, on the other hand, is full of players that virtually no one sees except a few die hard fans.

I say this because my favorite Indians site, Let's Go Tribe, went into meltdown mode yesterday over the Indians' draft picks. They did this based on college and high school stats, that are pretty meaningless, and because Keith Law, who I like and respect, didn't like their first round pick.

Just Friday morning rant, sorry that it is off topic.

Oh yeah
It looks like no Booger for us.

Exception: when the Pittsburgh Pirates pass on a premier college catching prospect (Matt Wieters), draft a freakin' relief pitcher, then their GM slips up and accidentally admits that the team has just selected only the 4th-ranked pitcher on the team's own board due to signability issues.

Or, with pretty much every draft Dave Littlefield ever presided over...

You're right, when you are picking that high, some of the players are known. Unlike when, like the Indians, you are picking 29th.

Gravatar Dwight White died.

the article

"Joe Greene remembered Dwight White as a person who could always make him laugh."

Gravatar In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations in Mr. White's memory be sent to The August Wilson Center of African American Culture at 425 Sixth Avenue, Suite 1750, Pittsburgh, 15219.

Gravatar I like the site redesign Ryan. Very nice.

Gravatar It seems all-pro fullback Lorenzo Neal is out of the job, and wants to be a Steeler. any takers??

Gravatar Very sad news on Dwight White. Met him around 1980. Reading that he was a trash-talker and a high-energy guy on the field is funny... of the field, he was very soft-spoken, unassuming and kind to an adoring kid. RIP.

Gravatar Men...

Back from Vegas - no celebrity sitings to report - I saw that Dwight passed, very sad...

What else did I miss? Anything?

Gravatar On Lorenzo Neal, if he's still a Pro Bowl-caliber blocker, that would be an upgrade of Carey Davis. Davis was to add versatility to the scheme, but he rarely ran with or caught the ball. And we've just added even more skill position weapons that Ben will have to spread the ball around to, so it's unlikely Davis will get more touches. So let's go with a FB who's good at what he's paid to do.

Gravatar ESPN the Magazine had a blurb saying that the Steelers are so impressed with Limas Sweed's burst that they think he'll be a force on blocking kicks. That would be great, although I definitely found it surprising. In the highlights I saw, he looked like a tall, lanky guy with good body control who could go up and get it but didn't get much separation after the catch. So either my mental image of him was wrong, or he's a combination of skills and limitations I haven't seen much of before in one player.

Gravatar I like Lorenzo Neal, but didn't we just decide not to re-hire him in the form of Dan Kreider? Both are good lead blockers, coming off of injuries, disfavored by their teams' new offensive philosophies, etc.

Gravatar By the way, if you read that Michael Silver article on Neal, definitely follow his advice further down in the column to search for "funnel game ktrotter3815 " -- or just go watch it here.

US women's national soccer team players engaged in pants-related hijinks.

Gravatar Matt, yeah, I'm basically saying that getting rid of a Kreider-style FB was a mistake, especially with the weakness of our interior OL. And I'm hoping that Neal is a better / healthier version of Kreider (although he also might cost more, too). Or we could just put Kemo at FB and change the name of the position to Juggernaut.

Gravatar I don't know if Neal is better or healthier -- he is a few years older, and coming off of a different injury than Danny is.

I just can't see the Steelers thinking Neal is worth it or that he fits the system if Kreider does not, though I suppose health could be a factor in that. But Kreider was de-emphasized last year long before getting hurt.

Gravatar Men....

I joined the conversation late, but on Sirius NFL Radio they were making reference to Ruben Brown as a Steeler? Did anyone hear anything like that??

Gravatar If he's not healthy and good and not too expensive, then no to Neal.

Haven't heard anything about Reuben Brown, but... I've been wondering about the Bears as a trading partner for Dookie since Benson was cut.

Gravatar Good article by Eddie B on Timmons taking over for Foote this year. Foote sounds like he knows he isn't going to hold the job for much longer. There is also speculation of whether Timmons would be more suited for Farrior's spot.

Gravatar But what have you done for me lately?

"EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- Star wide receiver Plaxico Burress is refusing to practice because the New York Giants haven't renegotiated a new contract since winning the Super Bowl.

"Burress reported to Giants Stadium for the mandatory minicamp Wednesday. But he says he told the coaching staff he won't work out without a new deal."

Gravatar Hi, kids..vacation time really cuts into my HSS reading..damn it..

LeCharles Bentley got released by the Browns. Before his injury, he was considered a DD type of center.

He's probably done as a player in the league but its tempting to see him as a solution to our ongoing center/O-line problems. Yes..I am desparate sometimes..

Gravatar Uh
No no Bentley. Come on, there is no way this guy is the player he once was.

Gravatar Yes yes Bentley. He'll come on the cheap, and even if he isn't the player he once was, there's a very good chance he's better than what we have right now.

Gravatar Bentley is at least worth a look. Who knows what condition he is in but it never hurts to have him in for a workout.

Great article by JJ. It does a very nice job showing that the line is terrible. Justin Hartwig and Max Starks better become all-pros this year, or Ben's going to be hit even more this season. Ouch!
