Re: Pavers...get someone who knows the ropes..I did it for a landscaping company for 3 summers and doing a good job is MUCH harder than it looks. Try and corral someone who does it for a living..you don't want an unfinished mess laying around if you get stuck..nor do you want it heaving and sinking after a long winter of thaw/freeze.
My boss made a fortune just fixing other people's mistakes. Don't be that person whose wife calls and says her hubby screwed it up...lol

Rob is right. I watched a contracter and his team install pavers for my backyard patio.

23. PITTSBURGH. Alan Faneca bolted for the Jets and a $21 million guarantee. So another guard, Branden Albert of Virginia, is a popular choice, but QUENTIN GROVES, DE-LB, Auburn, fits this year's pass rusher theme. Besides, how can Mike Tomlin and Kevin Colbert resist giving Dan Rooney someone who says: "Ever since I was little, I was always a Steeler fan. When I saw that black and gold for the first time, it was like, 'man, I love the way those guys play defense.' I'm kind of an old-school guy."

I have been looking through the pictures of the Steelers in OTAs on the Steelers webpage. There doesn't seem to be any definite shots of Starks. Does that mean that he is not participating?
He went to OTAs last year and still lost his starting job. If he skips OTAs this year, what does that do to his chances of being a starter this year?

Greg,
I just read somewhere (can't remember where) that Starks ain't showing up for OTAs. I don't think it's acrimonious, just that he's currently not on the team.

Coclough! Ugh. Unbelievable
As for the patio pavers, hire Steely McBeam. Or James Harrison. But not Cedric Wilson. He'd just drop the ball.
I've been picking up a Quentin Groves vibe, too, just 'cause, and NOT just because he was in here for a visit. On the other hand, it smacks of trying to make up for last year's first-round mistake -- but more to the point, it probably won't happen because of the salary cap implications for that particular position. Gotta spread it around, y'know what I mean?

The wife wanted to put in a smallish patio area in our backyard (we have a patio, but she wanted a "remote" patio). OK fine. It was sort of a rush job but mostly turned out fine, except for what it did to my back. Used pavers that were 15" square and heavy as hell, to make 10'x10' area. Well, hauling them to the new area killed my back, and then laying the pavers with a bad back really sealed the misery.
My advice is to take your time laying the groundwork, literally. Get the gravel and sand down smooth and level. Because we were laying this in anticipation of hosting a party, we rushed a bit and there are some minor buckles. Second bit of advice, whatever edger you use to keep the stones tight, get that business right, too. If you can take your time with this, it's not a hard job.

Bern1 -- Just send me your street address, and I will send you the broken record I've made explaining that Timmons was not (or not yet, at least) a first-round mistake. Based on one freaking year. When he was 21 years old, and injured throughout camp. And when they're moving him inside in the 3-4 to replace Farrior or Foote down the road. But anyway . . . .
If he's not starting in 2009, I'll be happy to consider the pick a mistake. If he turns out to be in the Polamalu mode instead of the Troy Edwards mode, I will not be that surprised. Or does every first rounder for the Steelers these days have to go undefeated in his first year in order to be a success?
Look at Santonio, for example. Did he improve at all from year one to year two? How many people were upset about that "mistake" in year one, when he had his arrests and only scored touchdowns in Ohio?

I think the defense has a chance to be even better than last year when it was ranked #1, late season slide and all. There really wasn't anyone last year who played above their heads or had a career season, although it could be argued that Harrison's year was a career year. Getting a healthy and productive Polamalu back along with with Clark alone should make the defense better. Woodley should be an upgrade over last year's version of Haggans and Timmons will likely at least contribute if not start. Plus Keisel can only improve over 2007.
I really think we could see a dominant defense next year, even better than the past year even if they don't end up ranked #1 again.

Randy, he's a fine pick.but you can see the seam where they bonded them together. I suggest we fill with 3/4 gravel, tamp down, fill with leveling sand or stone dust and lay the pavers in a herringbone pattern.
Voila.he's ready to play hybrid something or other.

Hope I'm not sounding like a marketing hack for Scout.com, but I gotta tell ya, they have some great draft stuff on that site.
Sample of conversation with their head scout Tom Marino:
WISteeler - Tom, is Dennis Dixon worth a late round pick for the Steelers? Can he be a successful QB in the NFL?
TomMarino - I don't think Dixon can spin the ball worth a shit. All little short stuff. Thin legs and is under contract to the Braves.
It's worth the price of admission, even if you only want to buy it for one month. Really, it will make you the smartest Steeler guy at the water cooler.

On Col's comment of "Getting a healthy and productive Polamalu back:" perhaps Troy is like Bob Sanders. Both are elite, game-changing safeties who have a difficult time staying on the field. Both hit much harder than their size would normally suggest, and they've ended up injured for chunks of recent seasons. They seem like smaller HBs who should be occasionally spelled with a tandem partner... especially during less important regular season games to stay fresh for the postseason.

Easy, I agree. Polamalu asks his body to do things that will inevitably result in injuries and missing significant time. And he's not exactly a massive guy, although superbly conditioned. I wouldn't want him to play any other way though..he's a thrill to watch. But I fear he will have a shortened career.

About the Announcing Gods ... Thank Gods!
Matt: Point taken. You're right. It IS be too soon to call Timmons a bust. Then again, he didn't do anything last year, and there were legitimate pre-draft arguments why there were better options than him at 1.15. He's done nothing to dispel those doubts. I hope he becomes an All-Pro, but I remain skeptical he will ever become more than a marginal starter. That's just me.
As for the this year's draft, I can't remember a Steelers draft that was so up in the air. It's screaming O-Line, but if Albert's gone, you could make an argument for any number of other players, at other positions, depending on who's available, of course. It looks like Albert WILL be gone, so ... if we're going to look more closely, would Sam Baker (USC) be worth a closer look? Just asking. Any thoughts?

As you have probably read, Quentin Groves recently had heart surgery. He is reportedly suffering from Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome. Symptoms include heart palpitations, dizzyness, fainting, and worse, cardiac arrest.
A better description is found here:
http://www.americanheart.org/
pre...identifier=4785
The success rate of the surgery, which can cure the condition, is reported to be 85-95 percent.
Still, would you risk a first round pick on him?
