heels, sox & steelers

Gravatar I have a good feeling today - it's cool and damp here in Chicago - football weather...

As I head off to brunch with SteelerDawn - Ryan will be updating me with our picks - I'll be back shortly though - and please DJ...do not jump off the ledge until I get back...I'll talk you off of it...

Think Duke Robinson; Herman Johnson; AQ Shipley...

Gravatar So is the picture in this article of:

1) Ziggy Hood after being selected by the Steelers or....

2) DJ after the Steelers didn't select a OL?

Had to do it DJ - talk to you guy's in a few...

http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/0...6/965729- 66.stm

Gravatar By the way, I read in the Post-Gazette this morning that if Ward signs his new contract, it could save the Steelers as much as $5 million this year in cap space.

Gravatar Like I mentioned in the last thread, the Steelers could've drafted Jarron Gilbert with their round 2 pick, which several people thought would be a worthy round 1 pick. But we drafted Ziggy round 1, so no go. Too bad we didn't make a move in round 1 to grab an OL that we liked.

Gravatar The Steelers could have taken Unger in the 1st and then satisfied their DL needs with Gilbert in the 2nd. It will be interesting to see how those guys do compared to Hood and who ever the Steelers take in the 3rd.

Gravatar Hey Ryan- We have another alumni in the NFL. Unfortunately he went to Jacksonville.

Gravatar And another two OL go off the board, 3 and 5 places in front of us.

Gravatar Make that 2 and 4.

Gravatar Make that 3, in 1, 2 and 4 before us.

Gravatar Vasquez sounded like a good prospect. Hood sounds like a great guy, reading the PPG, he thought he was going #24 to Detroit.

Gravatar Alright, a fat guy.

Gravatar This is the last pick I'll be around for, I'll check back in later!!

Gravatar So, we take the 4th OL in 5 picks.

I am not particularly relieved

Gravatar interesting that they would pass on DJ Moore, Rashad Johnson and Jamon Meredith...didn't see Meredith falling this far...

Gravatar I thought the Steelers had TJ Lang and Tyronne Green rated higher than Urbik, too. Apparently not.

Gravatar Let's hope the ghost of Mike Webster is with Urbik.

Gravatar Video of Urbik:

http://www.nfl.com/videos? videoI...9000d5d80f93290

The video of his Senior Bowl performance is not encouraging

Gravatar THE STEELERS SUCK! THEY TOOK THE 4TH IN OL IN 5 PICKS!! THAT IS WORSE THAN NOT TAKING AN OL AT ALL!!!

Gravatar Mayock and Wexell thought that Gilbert was a big bust potential.

Gravatar Bob - I apologize for expressing my opinion. I see now how wrong I am and how much I've personally offended you.

Gravatar Dude, they took an offensive linemen as you've been begging them to do, and then that's still not good enough for you because some other teams took linemena ahead of them?

Mayock just showed his senior bowl practice tape on NFLN and said he didn't have good feet one on one, but that he's a fighter and a mauler in a phone booth and may go to guard. Everyone says these Wisconsin O-Linemne are solid.

Well, everyone but you.

Gravatar Hmm. Maybe this guy can return kicks. Strikes me as them thinking that Sweed is a bust.

Gravatar Again, Bob, I apologize for personally offending you with my opinions about how the Steelers are doing in this draft. I know that should be my #1 priority when posting on this blog.

Gravatar Knew they were interested in Wallace. Didn't think he'd last this long.

Gravatar JB - maybe, though we did lose Nate.

Gravatar DJ Moore,Rashad Johnson, Jamon Meredith..weren't these guys supposed to be 2nd rounders?? why have they fallen so far? something character or medical we don't know about??

Gravatar From what I can find, Wallace is a fast and shifty WR, who doesn't run crisp routes and makes some ugly drops.

Sounds like a reasonable replacement for Nate

Gravatar True, but you'd like to think that for the next three years, a #2 draft pick can be your #3 WR. Then again, Hines could tear an ACL tomorrow and then Limas has to play, so I guess it could work.

Also, I love this Drew Rosenhaus commercial.

Gravatar DJ,

YOU'RE OFFENDING ME TOO!

Seriously, I like the Wallace pick, and Urbik is an obvious need. I wouldn't mind a DB at 96.

Gravatar RE: Urbik Sr. Bowl video: Mayock admitted that Urbik is dreadful in one-on-one drills, but is a different player in the game. So take that for what it's worth.

Gravatar I'm not personally offended. I'm laughing at you. "The Steelers must pick offensive line. Now. Now. Now!!! WAIT -- not THAT offensive lineman. He SUCKS! That wasn't meaningful enough in the attempt to address the line."

As if you know that Urbik will be worse or better than Urbik 5 years from now. No one can say for sure, but I'll put my money on the professionals rather than us chumps in here.

Gravatar Wallace can also return kicks. But I guess that's not a real need as long as we have Najeh -- I mean Gary Russell -- I mean ... Who's next? I guess Sean McHugh?

Yep, Wallace is a throwaway pick. Who needs "one of the fastest huimans" that Mayock says he's ever timed?

Gravatar In another video, I saw Urbik pulling on like 75% of the plays shown, which explains why we might draft him...

I hope he turns into a great player, but given that we took him right after 4 other teams took O-linemen means:

a) Its unlikely that he's the guy we had the highest grade on when we traded down from the 2nd round spot

b) 4 other teams passed on him to take a different OL

So I'm not exactly overwhelmed.

Gravatar I just don't understand why what other teams do signals the Steelers' draft grade to you. Teams have different grades on different players, and very well might have the same grade on a bunch of guys (for whatever all of the false and fake precision in draft "science" is worth.)

Gravatar Jesus F'n Christ Bob - where the fuck did anyone say anything negative about Wallace?

*looks back up the thread* Oh, that's right, NOWHERE

Seriously, dude, either chill the fuck out and be a little more friendly/polite or go crawl back into your cave. If someone here expresses an opinion that you disagree with, ITS NOT AN ATTACK ON YOU.

Jeez...

Gravatar And, to answer that question, its basic f'n probability.

5 players. One of them has to be the highest graded player. The Steelers got the last choice of the 5. Odds are, he was not the top graded of the bunch.

Do try to keep up, there, champ

Gravatar Thanks, chump. I will. You try to keep up too. Different teams have different scouts, different systems, and different qualities they look for. I guess Crabtree is not the highest graded or best receiver because the Raiders took Heyward-Bey. Right? It's just that simple. Some people had Sanchez graded ahead of Stafford, but in your universe that's impossible -- Stafford was picked 4whole spots earlier.

Simple probability. Ipso facto. Some other big words too. So there!

Gravatar Guys: WE'RE ON THE SAME TEAM!

Seriously, let's agree to disagree and move on. You're upsetting SteelerBill.

Gravatar Last thing I'll say on the matter:

To have a 50% chance that Urbik was the highest rated of the 4 OL chosen in those 5 picks, you would need it to be the case that there is an 79.4% chance that he was rated higher than each of the three individual OL. I find that to be a rather unlikely proposition.

Gravatar Keenan Who? The only Keenan I know played Miss Ellie's lover on Dallas.

Gravatar Keenan Lewis? That one surprised me.

Gravatar Highlight video of Keenan Lewis - looks good, though obviously its going to be somewhat cherrypicked:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6...h? v=6fcoBGwovZU

Still, looks good. Anyone have a decent scouting report?

Gravatar NFLDraftScout.com said Keenan was Academic All-Pac 10, so he's smart. They also compared him to Ronald Bartell, which would be fabulous.

Gravatar Decent video footage of K Lewis here:

http://video.aol.ca/video- detail...cid=VIDURVSPR08

Gravatar Why is DJ on a website instead of in a draft war room?

Oh, right. Because he doesn't know anything more than the rest of us. Calm down, guy. We get it, the Steelers aren't doing what you would do.

Gravatar To be fair, Josh McDaniels is in a draft war room. Maybe he should be here, too.

(Please move on, folks)

Gravatar hopefully in the 5th we can grab Frank Summers and Alex Boone/AQ Shipley

Gravatar I do think it's impressive how quickly McDaniels managed to succeed Millen as the laughingstock of the NFL. Not exactly what you'd expect from what seemed to be a very good OC (three very different offenses constructed in three straight season).

Oh, damn. I forgot about Al Davis. Second-biggest.

So, next should be DL and OL again, in no particular order, a S, and a QB, for the hell of it.

Gravatar Oh, I left a pick. Ummm...long snapper.

Gravatar Back!

Ryan thank you - I attempted to text you back asking if DJ was happy - now I know....

Gravatar > I find that to be a rather unlikely proposition.

DJ, using probability to assess this Urbik selection is quite imprecise. First, if the Steelers had felt any one of these five OLs were something very special above the others, they would have selected him at #64. Second, why stop at five possibilites in the analysis?-- there were still several OLs rated above Urbik on many draft boards remaining available (D. Robinson, H. Johnson, Meredith et al). It's a pigpile of leftover OL talent at this point. I don't find it terribly unlikely that Urbik (as something of a sleeper) was the Steelers' man as a 3rd-rounder and that they were fairly certain he'd be available.

Regardless, after the Steelers passed on OL in the first round (at #32 or by moving up) I have a hard time getting worked up over their eventual first OL selection. The main issue had already been established.

Gravatar So I'm watching Keenan Lewis' video on YouTube - the song playing in the background is 'gotta get your swag on...'

Somewhere Ike Taylor is smiling...

Gravatar This should cheer everyone up:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n...h? v=n_1rSm2MDM4

Gravatar Here's the deal on the O-Line and I've only had the opportunity to skim the responses...

Bob - I think DJ is having an issue with the fact that your initials are 'BA'

DJ - careful with the fact that 'other teams passed on him'....10 teams passed on a young guy named Roethlisberger and 24 teams passed on Santonio Holmes...

Gravatar Interviews of Lewis and, I think, Urbik coming up here.

http://sports.espn.go.com/ statio...tion=pittsburgh

Gravatar Men....

There are 32 teams with 32 front offices, 32 scouting staffs, 32 sets of fans and 32 sets of opinions...

Take that and combine it with all the Draft Sites out there and there is a lot if mis-information...

For purposes of this Site and for this Nation - only one opinion ultimately matters - and that is the collective opinion of the folks that pass 6 Lombardi Trophy's on their way to their offices each morning...

Gravatar Just read on SCI.com that Urbik, according to BA (the other BA), will compete for the starting job at Right Guard this season and will also learn center....

Gravatar Now that's funny...I posted the comment about Ike BEFORE reading that the Steelers compare Lewis 'favorably to Ike Taylor'

Gravatar If I may court peril here, and in the process defend DJ a little bit, this draft so far "feels" somewhat underwhelming. So far.

First, we took no "splash" players. No Holmes. No Mendenhall. No Miller. No Rothlisberger. Right now there's no one we can focus on about whom we can get excited. And that hurts a little bit. There's no player for us to rally around and reaffirm our faith in all things Steeler.

Secondly, this draft seems scattershot. The Steelers aren't trying to aim at one problem kill it.

Instead it's a little bit of this and a little bit of that, one from column A, one from column B. That can be an unsettling tactic to those of us who still suffer from dry heaves whenever the Steelers' 2006 draft is mentioned.

This is a draft that seems to lack a specific mission. And that can be unsettling, especially if you feel strongly that there are large looming problems that must be solved asap.

That said, I'm 1000% confident that the Steelers know infinitely more about their business than I do.

Gravatar > There are 32 teams with 32 front offices, 32 scouting staffs, 32 sets of fans and 32 sets of opinions...

Yep. And when I look at the names and general rankings of the three OL taken ahead of us in the 3rd round-- Robert Brewster, Antoine Caldwell (C), and Louis Vasquez amongst all the remaining OL with similar grades, I actually find it unlikely that the Steelers were scooped. And even if they were, we're talking about a crapshoot here anyway, where we could very well end up "accidentally" getting the right guy. Hell, we're nearing the end of the 4th round and there's still OL talent with decent grades out there.

Gravatar Umm...this is the 2nd time the Raiders have pulled this - they drafted someone that nobody has heard of:

http://www.nfl.com/draft/2009/pr...orris? id=238421

Gravatar Randy...I hear ya' but would rather get excited now? Or on Super Bowl Sunday?

I'll take the latter...

Gravatar Is Frank the Tank still available? Yes, right?

Gravatar Bill,
I'm with you. I don't give a squat who wins Draft Day.

Also, is anyone else suffering through ESPN's draft coverage? And what's with Bill Cosby and why do we have to watch his hapless attempts at humor? Did he suffer from a stroke?

Gravatar Tomlin just referred to Mike Wallace as a man that can 'take the top off the coverage'....

Somebody please write all these Tomlin-isms down...

Gravatar Randy...I'm watching NFLN and listening to ESPN Radio 1250 on the internet....

NFLN's coverage has been absolutely top notch..

Gravatar I won't speak for anyone else but I for one am VERY excited about Ziggy and I believe I see the "angle" that Colbert and Tomlin are coming from in this draft.

Bear with me here everyone but remember back to 2007 playoffs in which we limped into that game with the Jags with A Smith being hurt and not able to stop the run?

Remember back to how we limped into the Superbowl last year with Hines being hurt and how that affected our passing game through out the game and kinda prevented us from slamming the door shut on Arizona early before all the late game heroics from Warner and Fitz?

the Steelers have done a DAMN good job in this draft so far of adding DEPTH *(may need some more help on the O Line and DL)* but the point is I believe the Steelers are trying to prevent a late season injury from hurting us again in the playoffs..

Gravatar Oh and we also have to be very careful here in celebrating activity versus accomplishment...

Case in point - On ESPN Radio (National) this morning they were celebrating the 'bold moves' by the Jets the past two years....

They cited their move to acquire Favre last year and the move to draft Sanchez this year...

To which I responded - to no one in particular - Really? How did that Favre move work out for everyone? Super Bowl right? No? AFC Championship? No? Playoffs then right? Oh no?

Bold move indeed..

Gravatar Urbik just said on ESPN radio that he had had virtually no contact with the Steelers before the draft. The Steelers' front office must have a lot of faith in one of their Big 10 scouts.

Gravatar Oh yeah, I forgot to mention how the lack of a short yardage game hurt us in the superbowl as well...look for us to get Frank Summers here in the 5th and OT..

Gravatar Also...according to the Draft Magazine that I have here in front of me - they list Urbik as the best guard in the draft in his ability to 'pull and maul people'....

Gravatar Gruden has been a good listen/watch during this draft...

Gravatar Men...this is great stuff:

http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/blog...? urn=nfl,159005

Gravatar According to Eddie B - the Steelers were attempting to trade up in the 2nd Round for Unger or Levitre...

Gravatar Lewis and Wallace, according to Eddie B, grew up together and are best friends...

Gravatar McKillop was just selected by the 49ers...

Gravatar DJ...

Matt Williamson from Scouts, Inc. and ESPN is on ESPN Radio 1250 right now discussing Michael Oher and the fact that the Ravens traded up to get him - he stated that he thought that the 'Steelers should have considered' trading up for him...

Gravatar ....but this is a team that has a need for wideout and has yet to draft one...

Gravatar I meant the Ravens...not us...

Gravatar Howdy, SBill. As I read through the comments, it looks like you're the only one left right now...

I've never heard of any of the three guys picked in the 3rd round, but I like the positions at which they play. I just noticed that Duke Robinson and Herman Johnson are both still available...

Gravatar As is Shipley.

Gravatar So is Frank the Tank...

Eddie B said to look for the Steelers to go RB or even WR this round....

Gravatar And yes Dean, it's just you and I....I'm here for the duration...some how convincing SteelerDawn that it is only 2 days out of the year...

Gravatar I'm plenty excited about all our picks except for Urbik - and less so now that I know the Steelers didn't have any contact with him at all.

What's frustrating me is that the Steelers have needed to address the OL for three straight drafts, and have been unwilling to really commit to doing so. It didn't take much for the Ravens to go get Oher. It didn't take much for the Seahawks to go get Unger.

We've got 9 picks, and probably don't have room for 9 rookies on our roster. If we like a guy at the one position where we've got serious issues (like we presumably did with Unger), we should use some of our picks to go get him. Instead, the FO wasn't willing to put together a package that could beat Seattle's 3rd and 4th. Instead, we trade down then use a pick on a guy we haven't even talked to, right after 3 other guys at OL came off the board.

This team used to be excellent at manipulating the draft and drafting players of value at need positions at good value spots in the draft (see: Hampton, Polamalu, Santonio). In the last three years, however, we've done a terrible job, and we've let the biggest hole on our roster remain unfilled.

At some point, our anemic offensive line is going to kill us. Our FO just doesn't seem to consider it an important area to address.

Gravatar Whew...DJ is still here...I thought you jumped off of something...

All makes sense DJ...but until these guy's get on the field...it's all speculation....(both with respect to the current players as well as draftees)

Gravatar Macho Harris is also available- the guy could play corner at VT. He lacks measurables but he was the best player on that defense this year. He was also a punt returner there as well. I think he'd be a decent gamble in the 5th round.

Gravatar Rocco...you must be watching NFLN....

Gravatar I watched Macho play his whole career, and would love to see him be in Black & Gold. The one position group that VT knows how to develop is DB, they have a good number of those starting on NFL teams. Though our past two VT draft picks haven't worked out, Macho would be a good one to get.

Gravatar DJ...let me ask you this...

Will you be happy if Urbik starts this year? That would answer the question about addressing a need...

Gravatar SB- I heard them talk about Harris earlier. It's mostly from being a VT fan and watching them a ton.

Nevermind, Philly took him. Bastards.

Gravatar I would rather have Mike Mickens or Coye Francies than Harris anyway

Gravatar DJ, I think you have a very valid opinion on this..I share the idea that Oher was worth trading up to get but I also have to realize that people with access to a lot more info didn't think he was. Only time will tell.

Overall, I like most of the picks. I guess I would have been happy if they hadn't reupped Kemo and signed Mike Goff in the offseason if they weren't thinking they were likely to find quality in the draft at OG or OT.

There seems to be a growing opinion that all our O-line needs is more time together to get to an average level of competence and that we shouldn't fret so much over their sack allowed totals. Again, only time will tell.

I am beginning to think that this is one of the weakest drafts in recent memory. NE seemed to think that ..they kept trading out of the first round. We may not get much flash, but hopefully we have acquired some substance.

Gravatar Rob...

Matt Williamson is on ESPN Radio 1250 repeatedly stating how weak of a draft this is...

Gravatar Also, what's up with OT Jamon Meredith? He's been near the top of both ESPN's and scout.com's "best available" all day. I know that doesn't mean a whole lot, but this guy has slipped pretty far.

Gravatar SB..thanks..I am only getting my info from HSS..which means you..wink

I am having a working Sunday...and I have a cold..not swine flu!...

Gravatar Rob/DJ....

You both bring up some very good points...

IF the Steelers believed that the OL was a huge issue they would have addressed it by moving up in Rd 1 for Oher or drafting Unger.

Which leads me to conclude that it isn't an area of concern for the team...

Which further intrigues me and only time will tell...

Gravatar For those of you what wanted Duke Robinson - Wex calls him a Kemo clone....so be careful...

Personally I'm a Herman Johnson fan - Wex calls him a Herman Munster clone...

Gravatar So here's a question - we have back to back picks in this Round - how do you decide which guy you pick first?

Gravatar If Urbik starts this year, and the next several years, and is a good player, then I'm happy. However, if he's only a good player, while Oher or, especially, Unger are great players I will still be annoyed.

However, I'm unhappy now because I don't think that its tremendously likely that Urbik will be a real difference maker. Its hard to trust the FO when they barely even scouted the guy, from all accounts.

Gravatar Duke Robinson just went to Carolina....

I'm pushing for Frank the Tank and Herman Munster....but what do I know?

Gravatar DJ...the way it was explained on the radio is that the Steelers did speak briefly at the Combine and that there are Scouts within the organization that are thought of very highly - the speculation is that our Wisconsin Scout is one of those men...

Gravatar DJ,,yep..can't argue with you on that point. I do remember reading some stuff on him in my pathetic attempt to keep up with the draft this year (with varying results) and I thought he was a decent player.

Part of me is a little pissed because Ozzie picked up Oher and he's a guy who knows how to scout talent. So that makes you pause a little..

Not to beat a dead horse...I wanted Oher..lol..And I need to shut up now.

Gravatar SB - I want Frank Summers as well, but in the 7th round. How do you take a fullback in the 5th?

Honestly, I'm hoping for two of the following: Don Carey, Louis Vasquez, Augustus Parrish, Richard Quinn, DeAndre Levy, CJ Davis

And that's just so I can get a friggin point in Randy's draft contest.

Gravatar Matt Williamson is saying to look at:

ILB Beckwith from LSU
OG from LSU
Mickens, CB
Lots of RB's available too
TE maybe?

Gravatar whoops, that list should have been: AQ Shipley, Ra'Shon Harris, Sammie Lee Hill, Don Carey, Louis Vasquez, Augustus Parrish

Gravatar And here it goes...we're next...

Somebody hold on to DJ....

Gravatar Damn! Herman Johnson just went to the Cards...

Gravatar Sammie Lee Hill, Vasquez already gone

Gravatar The tapes that Mayock is showing are awful....nevermind...I'm glad the Cards got him..

Gravatar Herman Munster! A Cardinal..

Gravatar I think he is an auto bust pick..they keep saying he was the biggest baby in LA history..and errrrr..thats about it..

Gravatar I swear that certain teams including Arizona have PURPOSELY taken guys they knew would have been great Steelers...

Gravatar We're on the Clock...

Dennis Dixon
William Gay
Verron Haynes
Okobi
Brian St. Pierre

Recent 5th Rounders

Gravatar not a bad list

Gravatar CB Joe Burnett Central Florida

Gravatar Any vid on him?

Gravatar http://www.nfl.com/draft/2009/pr...urnett? id=79547

Gravatar Another CB? Didn't we just sign Ratliff?

Gravatar Tanks, SB

and guess who we took next..

The Tank!!

Gravatar Bang! Bang! Burnett and Summers.

Gravatar Wait? We did???

Gravatar Matt Williamson calls Burnett is a 'great Steeler pick'

Gravatar I repeat: how do you use a 5th round pick on a fullback?

Gravatar Frank Summers..short yardage back ..mmmmm..mmmmm..good!

Gravatar Ah, is he more a short yardage guy than a fullback?

Gravatar DK - I'd spend a 5th on Alstott or Hodge.

That said, the way BA uses fullbacks...

Gravatar Tomlin on NFLN!

Gravatar Tomlin is on NFLN

Gravatar Frank the Tank!! Frank the Tank!!

Gravatar Stoopid Comcast...

Gravatar DJ, I have Comcast and am watching NFLN... That is, until May 1

Gravatar Well, if you can't fix your O-line, roll out your tank.

Gravatar http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M...E7EB410& index=8

Gravatar http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I...h? v=IC1OFDMdMik

Gravatar Frank Summers is the first pick in this Steeler draft that has made me...
inexplictably happy.

Gravatar Wait until the OL have him crawling up their backs.....

Did I say this already? Frank the Tank!

Gravatar Did I mention that I just scored 2 points during the 5th round in our contest! Of course, they're the only points I've scored, but I'll take it.

Gravatar 107.3 speed score - not bad, not great, but I think he should be a good player.

Gravatar Randy,,doesn't that make you the leader? hee hee..

I know its crazy,,but just saying Frank the Tank is soothing..

Gravatar Quick run to Dunkin Donuts for an afternoon coffee break - I would take my Tank but he's in Pittsburgh...

(ok I'm done)

Gravatar After watching that video and also watching Tomlin talk about Frank the Tank, I'm also excited. Tomlin mentioned that he can do some things on special teams, and considering how bad our kickoff return unit was last year, I think that he can make quite an impact, so to speak.

Gravatar Randy, I think I picked up 0.5 point there in the 5th round with the selection of Summers.

Gravatar If the New York Post covered the Steelers, the headline on the back page tomorrow:

Steelers Go Old School!

Gravatar From NFL DraftScout:

03/06/09 - UNLV Pro day: The Super Bowl champion Pittsburgh Steelers sent two scouts and running backs coach Kirby Wilson, who worked personally with Summers on some drills. Pittsburgh could use a short-yardage back, and Wilson said Summers looks like the type of player who can move the line of scrimmage. "The guys that I've talked to -- the other running back coaches -- have all said he might be one of the more difficult guys to tackle that they've seen on film this year," Wilson said. He was most surprised by Summers' catching ability. "He really is rare," Wilson said. "You don't see that out of a big man much." Players who aren't invited to the combine aren't likely to get drafted, but Summers hopes to be the exception. "I can come in and take up three positions on one roster spot," Summers said. "I think it's huge. I can play fullback, I can play tailback, obviously special teams. I'm sure I could play defense if they needed me there, too." The Steelers were the only club to send more than one representative. Summers said the Indianapolis Colts' scout praised his preparation. - Mark Anderson, Las Vegas Review-Journal

Gravatar Just took a quick look at our contest entries and here are our scores so far. Please check these results. I may have missed someone or screwed up otherwise.

ME! 2 points
Cols 1.5 points
Easy 1 point
Bengt 1 point
Will 1 point
Dean .5 point

Gravatar Randy...good job!! where did you score your 2 points??

Gravatar Ok I'm back...did Frank run anyone over while I was gone??

Gravatar ESPN radio guys are gushing over Frank "The Tank" Summers

Gravatar We still have a few picks to go but...

We have addressed our needs at:

Short yardage back (The Tank)
Interior line (Urbik)
Kick Returner (Mike Wallace/Burnett)
Punt Returner (Burnett)
Deep Threat WR (Wallace)
Defensive Line depth and future starter (Ziggy)
Corner (Burnett/Lewis)

Not bad...not bad

Gravatar Seems like a good list so far. Still have safety depth and OL (Center & Tackle) to think about

Gravatar And don't forget that Summers can hopefully help with kickoff returns.

Gravatar will you are right...Ken Laird is about to go buy a Summers jersey....he's losing his mind over the guy...I thought I was bad...

Gravatar "Randy...where did you score your 2 points??"

Will,
I got both 5th round picks correct for 1 point each.

Gravatar I meant that he can help improve kickoff returns by running over would-be tacklers of the other guy carrying the ball.

Gravatar Eddie B asked Frank where the nickname came from....

It comes from his mother....

And he currently weighs in at 242

Gravatar "Frank the Tank" got his nickname from his mother.

Another Steeler draftee who comes equipped with his own nickname, which is always critical.

He also says he can play special teams. Really.

Gravatar Randy and I are very tuned in here....

The call for a Goal Line Drill with Frank the Tank versus the Big Snack is priceless

Gravatar can one of you give me the link to the broadcast?

Gravatar NE just took a LS...long snapper..

the draft is officially over.

Gravatar How about Shipley at 6.205?

Gravatar I'm DJ Any Reason and I endorse SB's message.

Gravatar Shipley or CJ Davis would be fine with me

Gravatar Thank you DJ...

A young man from Rutgers was just drafted and the crowd lost their minds...

Gravatar Ra'Shon Harris still available... Please let me have one correct pick!

Gravatar Congrats bengt

Gravatar Hopefully Shipley lasts until the 7th, and hopefully we grab him then?

Gravatar There you go bengt

Gravatar Either that or sign Shipley as a FA

Gravatar hey!! i got another point with that pick of Rashon Harris

Gravatar Na also, geht doch!

Gravatar I got another half point, woo hoo

Gravatar Who's Sonny Harris?

Gravatar Ra'Shon..name makes me think of all those great Kurosawa movies...lol...

So is he like..a samurai?

Gravatar The Steelers 6th Round Draft Pick...

Gravatar Well if you are on Twitter - send along your suggestion for game tape to the NFLN guy's = they have officially lost it....

Gravatar Boy,,they visit..they get drafted.

*****

The Steelers met with their fourth college prospect Thursday, when Oregon defensive tackle Ra'Shon Harris visited the team at its South Side practice facility.

Harris started just one season for the Ducks, recording 47 tackles, including nine for losses, and three sacks in 2008.

The 6-3 1/2, 297-pound Harris projects as an end in a 3-4 defense in the NFL, and getting younger up front appears to be a priority for the Steelers. Their top five players on the defensive line are all at least 30 years old.

In addition to Harris, the Steelers have had Arizona wide receiver Mike Thomas, Oklahoma offensive tackle Phil Loadholt and University of Central Florida cornerback Joe Burnett in for visits.

Gravatar Good god, I sucked more than I thought imaginable in the Steele Draft contest.

Gravatar ahhh..the 7th round stretch..

I wish we could draft cheerleaders at this point..Shouldn't we have one super babe who represents the Steelers?

I know..blasphemy...

Gravatar Wow. We did well with Ra'shon Harris (aka Sonny Harris) as a 6th round pick in our contest.

Bengt, Cols, Will, and I all picked him in the correct round. And Dean scored another 1/2 point, too!

Good work, Men.

Gravatar The Bengals just selected a guy that has been arrested several times and attended several schools...

Raise your hand if you are shocked...

Gravatar Ryan, and you actually know something about this stuff..unlike me..

I guess you don't like your picks now..but do you have a snap judgement on the Steelers draft. I'm thinking they did pretty good.. B - ..

Gravatar The score so far. Again, please check your results. I may have missed someone.

ME!! 3 points
Cols 2.5 points
Bengt 2 points
Will 2 points
Easy 1 point
Dean 1 point

Gravatar So the Steelers are probably on the phone with potential UDFAs right now trying to figure out which ones that they want would sign with them and which wouldn't in order to use the picks on the ones that wouldn't sign with them.

Gravatar I think I can now officially shed the label of HSS draft expert.

Gravatar I especially love the return ability of Burnett and Wallace. Gawd, I hope we have found some weapons in that aspect of the game. And we get Robo back! I am digging it.

Gravatar The Bengals are currently searching arrest records in Florida for their next pick.

Gravatar Dean..the saga continues..What is Charles Manson's 40 time?

Just asking for a friend..

Gravatar not sure, but I think that OJ is still available

Gravatar Prison Stripes = Bengal Stripes

Gravatar ok, 7.226 - Augustus Parrish

Gravatar Where's DJ?? Where's DJ???

Gravatar Woo hoo!

Gravatar I am outta here after this pick...thanks for the ride people and your many valuable comments. Will be an interesting week on HSS as we ponder the picks..

Hey!! Shipley is drafted by us..!!

Gravatar Well done, Kevin and Mike.

Gravatar Wouldn't that be ironic if this guy turns out to be a legit center for us..after all the Mack, Wood and Unger speculation?

OK..not likely, but he's a gamer if nothing else.

Gravatar Not bad, I like the pick.

Gravatar It's after midnight here, goodnight everybody.

Gravatar Lots of Shipley fans on this site. We are late round demons around. Here's the score so far. Again, please check your results. I may have messed up.

One point for getting correct name and round. One-half point for correct name, but wrong round.

ME!!! 3.5 points
Cols 3 points
Bengt 2.5 points
Will 2 points
Easy 1.5 point
Dean 1.5 point

Gravatar By the way, Shipley scored an impressive 40 on his Wonderlic test. (Maybe we should change his name from A.Q. to I.Q. Shipley.)

Gravatar Nice work Randy....on the nickname and the draft....

Somewhere Wex is rejoicing

Gravatar So what can we conclude coming from the draft about the current roster? I'd say that the FO needs to get to work re-signing Ryan Clark and Casey Hampton.

Gravatar So who else do we take in the 7th...??? I'm really at a loss...

Gravatar Why, Augustus Parrish, of course.

Gravatar I SHOULD HAVE A HALF-POINT FOR JOE BURNETT!!!

(Desperately doesn't want to get shut out)

Gravatar Augustus would be nice...im leaning toward Gerald Cadogan or Khalif Mitchell

Gravatar hope we bring in Gred Isdaner and Jason Watkins as UDFA O-linemen

Gravatar We're on the clock!!

Gravatar Wait...the Cardinals just drafted LaRod Stephens-Howling - weren't there a couple of movies about him????

Gravatar A TE it is...

Gravatar A TE?????

Gravatar duh...

Gravatar Ok, good evening all. We'll read about the UDFAs tomorrow.

Gravatar I'm sticking around until Mr. Irrelevant....

This only happens once a year

Gravatar Oops! Sorry, Ryan! Here's the final score. Again, please check your results. I easily may have messed up the count.

One point for getting correct name and round. One-half point for correct name, but wrong round.

ME!!! 3.5 points
Cols 3 points
Bengt 2.5 points
Will 2 points
Easy 1.5 points
Dean 1.5 points
Ryan .5 point

It's probably not a coincidence that not only did I win, but I also wrote the rules and kept the score.

And with that, you may all bask in the glory of my greatness. I am the draft khan of all khans! Tremble, all men, and obey.

Gravatar Mike Mayock just said that Burnett was the only player in the country that finished in the top 3 in both PR and KR....

Gravatar According to Wex DJ Johnson, the TE, can also play FB....

Gravatar 11 USC players were selected this year.....

Gravatar Men....here is your new punt returner - Joe Burnett:

Gravatar Since I've asked for DL in R1 the past two years, I'm pretty happy. For pure shock factor, I love Frank the Tank in R5 (2nd pick). When draft analysts call you a slobber-knocker, well, football fans cheer.

Someone mentioned earlier we only had 1 1st rounder in the 2005 SB, but technically, we had 3. Simmons, Hartings and Faneca were all 1st rounders (though Hartings was drafted by the Lions).

Maybe Urbick will be a longtime (good) starter. We'll know in a couple of years!

Gravatar Michael Oher, in his press conference, said that he was going to do everything he could to help Baltimore "..beat Pittsburgh"

Gravatar I missed this...but Mayock said that he clocked Wallace at 4.28....he was timed at 4.33 in Indy

Gravatar This...from NationalFootballPost.com:

In my opinion, the Steelers got the draft’s top vertical threat, WR Mike Wallace. Pittsburgh lost WR Nate Washington this offseason via free agency, and I see Wallace filling a similar role in the Steelers’ offense.

http://www.nationalfootballpost....-day-two-notes/

Gravatar So is Mike Wallace a "60 Minutes" Man?

Gravatar Info on Lord Byron:

http://www.nationalfootballpost....a-smoke-screen/

Gravatar Wow
I just read through the comments, great comments. I can't believe I got 3 points! Go me!

I'm OK with the draft, like DJ I wish we got more fat people, in particular, Oher, since the Ravens don't miss on too many 1sts.

Other than that, like everyone else, I'm glad to give the Steelers FO the benefit of the doubt. They deserve it.

Gravatar UDFA signing by the Steelers:

Safety Derrick Richardson, New Mexico

http://www.nfldraftbible.com/ Lat...h_steelers.html

Gravatar UDFA QB Mike Reilly of Central Washington is a Steeler:

http://www.nfldraftbible.com/ Lat..._qb_reilly.html

Gravatar A little from Frank the Tank and his conversation with Coach Tomlin:

http://rebelnation.lvrj.com/2009...y-steelers- pick

Gravatar Early in the day today, Ron Jaworski emphatically said that Mike Reilly was the biggest impact QB still available (McShay disagreed and Kiper was silent).

Not sure if that means Reilly is a great sleeper, or that the 2nd day QB's really suck.

Gravatar Another UDFA for the Steelers - Hillsdale College LB Tom Korte:

http://www.hillsdale.edu/admissi...ics/ Default.asp

Gravatar To ditto Anon's remark, Jaws was going apesh*t all day on ESPN (as well as being totally unapologetic about his enthusiasm)about how wonderful Mike Reilly is, and that he might have the skill set to be the next Tom Brady.

Gravatar I realize there is sentiment out there saying that the Steelers should have traded up for Oher or Unger - but I gotta tell ya...I'm pretty pleased about the Draft...

We may very well have drafted two new starting OL - plus a new starting DL - and some really really fast returners...and how can we forget my personal favorite Frank the Tank...

Gravatar Info on Mike Reilly:

http://www.draftcountdown.com/sc...Mike- Reilly.php

Gravatar James Harrison is relieved - we signed a Long Snapper from Pitt:

http://www.pittsburghlive.com/x/...s/ s_622428.html

Gravatar At S, none drafted and Carter the only backup with NFL experience. Lots of bodies at CB. Deshea to S?

Gravatar There were as many TEs drafted (21) as Cs (7) and OGs (14) combined.

Gravatar IMHO Cols can have two full points for having correctly picked The Tank and Joe Burnett in round five, albeit both as #169.
