It's great to see rooibos finally getting some attention, especially for the mental benefits which I have found to be very impressive. Great article, thank you brain ready!

Hi, I got to know about BrainReady from DoMatcha's website and since then, have been hanging around the community. I must say I'm impressed by the amount of useful info I found and am already acting on them. Concerning rooibos, please could you name a particular brand that you trust and recommend -- I mean the one you actually use. After reading about the wonderful benefits of rooibos I went ahead and bought the 4 packs of NOW Foods Rooibos. But, it seems they haven't got the real thing; the ingredients list reads: Organic Rooibos (Aspalathus Linearis) (leaves, branches, stems). I think it should contain only the leaves and that all other stuff they put in there are just fillers. I do not want to go guessing anymore that's why I'm asking for an authentic source. Please help me out.

Hello Emma, thanks for the great question! Actually, the combination of leaves, stems and branches is completely fine and very much in the traditional Rooibos preparation (some use just leaves, but many if not most use leaves plus the stems and branches). Although we haven't tried the NOW brand ourselves, if it is certified organic and smells & tastes quite fresh and of good quality, it's likely just fine.

We didn't mention a specific brand in our article, partially to stay 'neutral' and also because we simply haven't tried enough different brands to make an educated recommendation yet (at the time of writing). But after trying a few different ones, we're pleasantly surprised to say that we're enjoying the Teavana brand red organic Rooibos, which is available either online and in their (increasing number of) stores around the U.S. and beyond. Although they also offer many Rooibos blends, we stick with the highest-grade organic 100% variety, which is extremely fresh and we think fantastic.

For those without Teavana locations near them, you can order via their web site, and the Rooibos that we like is at:

http://www.teavana.com/South+Afr.../ ProductDetails

As we try others, including more green Rooibos varieties, we'll update the site with more info. Until then, the Teavana stuff is great and we've also been impressed by their other teas, particularly the rare white tea and their Gyokuro variety too. Very fresh, very convenient.

Hope this helps!

Thanks a lot for your prompt response. That was indeed helpful. Teavana's Organic Rooibos goes for $4.50 per 2 oz packaging and I guess that's roughly 56 g. How many servings does that make? Also, I would like to know what the packaging is like.

In my search I happened to come across another brand here: http://www.africanredtea.com/roo...os-red- tea.html and it looks like they're up to something good. Their product is organic and kosher. Have you tried this one? If so, what do you think of it?

Hello again Emma,

We're not sure what the mail-order Teavana packaging is like as we buy it locally here in Seattle at their store (and then keep it in one of their airtight large tins that they sell...works great), but I'm sure it's quite good.

Haven't tried the AfricanRedTea.com products, but from the descriptions it does indeed look like the real deal...may be at least worth trying and comparing!

Best regards,

The BrainReady Team

People who drink sodas know it's bad for them. Therefore, I shouldn't have to pay for their health care costs.

Hi all,
Teavana sells the best rooibos teas. I have tried many different brands and they are not to compare. I agree with Paul that the teas at Teavana are fresh, however their matcha tea has no flavor and a bit bitter and i feel like it's not the same quality as domatcha and zenmatcha.
Jo, people do lot of bad things but at least drinking sodas hurt only the consumers and has no effects on other people like smoking cigarettes or drinking alcohol. Soda drinkers can still be my friends.

I tried the website emeke had offered - www.africanredtea.com and bought a pound of Red Tea for 17 dollars including shipping to Colorado. The tea seems high quality and it comes packaged in several smaller portioned bags. It took about 4 days to get to me. I had previously purchased from Teavana, but this price is significantly cheaper.

I live in South Africa, so Rooibos is just about in every household here, which is pretty amazing actually. When someone offers "coffee or tea" here, it is assumed that one is offering "coffee, tea, or rooibos".

I guzzle it down daily. It's great!

I get these really cheap tea bags that just say contain imported Aspalathus linearis. Are tea bags really a lot worse or are they still acceptable as a source of all this?

Hi there
Love your website! I grew up in South Africa (SA) and like my fellow many South Africans grew up drinking rooibos. I left SA many years ago and must say that I had to settle for Tetley's. But up until recent rooibos has appearing in our grocery shelves more often and I am back drinking it. My recent visit to SA I learned that you can give rooibos to babies. It's called Rooibos for Babies. Would you know of an outlet who supplies it here in Langley, British Columbia, Canada. Thanks

and as teas go - this one tastes good.

When they say re rooibos is fermented, does it have any alcohol content?

Thx

I just ordered the red tea from African Red Tea Imports. I ordered it in tea bags because I am a convenience person. I know bags are not recommended but it has to be better then the bagged green tea I am getting at my suppermarket. One step at a time.

good article.

It's true. When I was in Clanwilliam a week ago, I visited the Ramskop Wildflower Garden. I learned a lot of the healing powers of Rooibos tea. Thanks for your information on the topic.
