Gravatar Interesting perspective. I think the national average response time is around 11 minutes, but that incorporates Urban Paid EMS (like mine) with response times as low as 3 minutes and rural providers with responses >15minutes.

Where do you live that EMS is green? Most places I have been to use Red/White. Also its good to know that you are allowed code equipment in your vehicles. In Alabama thats not allowed except in certified emergency vehicles. So the Volunteers can't run with code.

Gravatar Interesting to note that in our county no VFD provides transport. They respond from their house to the call directly. All the EMTS have pagers/radios and a BLS response kit (some with AEDS) in their cars. If more is needed someone drives to the station to get the Van/Truck. Once on scene they stabilize and provide BLS care until our ALS units arrive. It works pretty well. Someone is generally on scene, even in the remote areas, within 5 minutes, even though it may take longer to get an ambulance on scene.

Gravatar Hi Doc,

New York State:
Green for volunteer EMS.
Blue for volunteer Fire.

Your system is interesting. Who do you call for transport? How long does it take them to respond? Do all of your EMTs have radios? Do you have to pay for the BLS supplies in your car or does your service?

Here some EMS is associated with fire departments, some not. My town has fire and ambulance separate. Fire handles extrication and often responds to medical calls with a first response squad that wil have either CFFs (certified first repsonders) and sometimes EMTs. Ambulance comes at worse EMT basics, usually with a medic.

Gravatar We have a realyy good EMS/Fire system int he county. I live inside the city limits so I am not included in that, but working for the only ALS 911 provider, I deal with all of it.

Huntsville uses our Ambulance service exclusively. The Ambulance providers First Responders in Fast response cars inside the city Limits. They are all volunteer and at least EMT-Bs. Huntsville Fire provides BLS First repsonse from 3 outlying stations only.

Gravatar The City of Madison uses our serive as well, but the FD there provides ALS First Response. We still take over the scene, but they have FF/EMTs or FF/Paramedics on the trucks. There is soon going to be a big issue with all that, politics.

The county Fire departments all have Fire-Rescue and EMS divisions. They are all VFDs and none are paid. The Fire side works pretty much like any VFD. Call comes out and they go to the station, get the truck and go.

Gravatar On the EMS side, everyone is an EMT-B or better and live in the fire response zone. When they join the department provides a BLS level bag and a radio for their cars. When a call comes out everyone is paged and the closest person goes POV to the scene. We are dispatched simulatenously as the VFD responders are only BLS First response and don't transport. Some have Units that stock Backboards, etc, but they still don't transport.

In Alabama POVS can't use lights or sirens, so they have to go Code 1. Some departments have Fast Response Cars, but not all. And generally only the Captains use them.

Gravatar Very, very different than over here in the UK where the response is the same all over the country. You Americans have to make things complicated for yourselves don't you...

Gravatar Very interesting. We have 3 ambulances in our town 1 paramedic (ALS) on duty 24 hrs a day when we take (we answer the 000 calls (same as 911) an call, we phone the volunteer on the board for that 1/2 shift and either pick them up as we pass their house or meet them at teh scene if that is better. We have a better than 10 minute response. If a second call comes in and can't be dealt with by that crew, then another Paramedic is despatched on overtime and another volunteer called.

Good Post

Gravatar Hi Ed,

Sorry for the delay - I don't know if you'll see this.

Are your medics paid or vollys?

Thanks for the comments!
