I had not heard about this murder. I'm against the whole hate crime agenda just as a matter of principle.
This kid should fry - no matter what his or his victim's race is or was. I'll even volunteer to throw the switch.
Hate crimes are thought crimes. Might as well give killers more or less punishment depending on what kind of faces they made while they murdered. Horrible grimaces could enhance an otherwise commonplace murder. Faces would be easier to read than minds.
Suppose the cat admits he did it to express his racial hatred and feels he was justified? I don't like thought crimes but, hypothetically, if he were to make such a remorseless confession in open court, couldn't we use it to move his execution from Old Sparky to the flaying rack?
Laws never seem to stand close scrutiny. Justice is an ideal; laws are all too real.
In a perfect world it wouldn't matter if this a-hole killed the gal because she was black or just because she liked Long John Silver restaurants - there wasn't any logic in his choices. IMHO she is just as dead no matter the reason for his actions.
I think a remorseless confession - no matter the reason - in open court should speed his demise, period. What if it turned out he had killed a large number of people for frequenting LJS? Wouldn't that be worse than killing just one gal for being black? Would it qualify as a hate crime?
Unfortunately with our justice system his frying in Old Sparky isn't guaranteed.
