What is it about trying to say or do something that lets your gay friends know that you fully accept them and that you're on their side, despite your total lack of affinity to their lifestyle, that results in the condescending smile and raised eyebrows, telling you without even speaking a word that, no, you're not on their side, you're never going to be on their side so please quit trying because it's really quite embarrassing?
