Gravatar I am not going until they work this darn particle thing out even at $10 a pound.

Gravatar lol Dr John, neither am I
even if it were offered for free. Aging on Earth occurs soon enough, I'm in no hurry to accelerate the process.

Gravatar interesting,we may even fly without wings

Gravatar Q9, Did you see the article about the space race in this weeks Sunday Times magazine? It was written by blogger Bryan Appleyard. I didn't realise that astonauts haven't landed on the moon since 1972.

If you can't locate the article on the internet, I will happily post it to you. It's called The New Space Race.

Gravatar Ditto the ageing process . to hell with accelerating it. I'll go on the spaceship that finds the way to reverse it. Lol!
Starship Enterprise here we come ...

Gravatar Hi Vishesh,
we have delta wings and we already fly without wings - air baloons are filled with air, and helicopters have rotor blades.
But we do not need wings at all (as such) in Space

Gravatar Hi Elle, Thanks!
I've added a link to the Sunday Times article

Gravatar Hi Abigail, you & me both
A decay free environment or atmosphere would suit me down to the ground. But for now let us just say that we are only as 'old' as we feel, and girl oh girl, can some people make us feel young

Gravatar This is my first visit here, and it's early morning in my neck of the woods. It's a wonderful time to contemplate the thought that time can be accelerated or decelerated.

Gravatar can't read too much on this monitor today;yet I am sure the article would set my brain cells moving. just dropping off a smile!!!

Gravatar We really should fix this planet before we try take on space. Some folks think that a bogeyman God in the sky creates all that out there. But in truth it's just mysterious cosmic energy that we don't yet fully understand. And it sems to have no other purpose than to change phase and particle permutate.

Banging away on Lulu, banging away all day. Hey boys, what ya gonna do for banging away when Lulu moves away?

Ah, just a little ditty that popped into my head.

Gravatar Hi Marlayna, serendipity
I was curfing the net and cruising round your site earler on
Yes, it is amazing how time seems to dilate and contract, but if you are referring to aging this seems to relate to radiation, particle decay and where one is in space-time. Even on Earth.

Gravatar Hi Pauline,
I hope the article is still worth a read and makes sense, when the blurry vision clears up.

Gravatar Hi BBC, in part the idea is that space travel and research in space will offer us answers and alternative sources of energy long before we totally deplete all the resources on this beautiful planet

Gravatar "Boots No 7 Protect and Perfect Beauty Serum" maybe could solve even this problem? - Anyway, next time you visit Sweden, please bring me one against ageing

(( hugs ))

Gravatar Hi Anna-lys,
ahh but some mature and age with such beauty and grace.
Not sure how much use you have for suncream in Sweden, but I'll see what I can do. In the meantime, here's hugs & smiles flowing back your way.

Gravatar Delighted to hear it Q9, now going to watch Spooks.

James thinks he is on Whistleblower next week, not this, btw.

Thanks for your great comments, as always. I am going to visit Cambridge Uni press office tomorrow. Fingers crossed.

Gravatar Some of these spaceships will undoubtedly look like submarines in construction. And the crew will have to have the same psychological make-up also to endure the long trip.

If that approach is used, I would like to see vast improvements in propulsion technology to shorten travel times.

If not, I say capture two Near Earth Objects, hollow them out a ways, cable out 2000 meters of carbon nanotube to both, pull taut using attitude jets, start accelerating with ION engines. After achieving Mars orbit injection speed, stop motors and spin the habitats about the common center for centripetal force for fake gravity.

Slow going for sure, but if the walls of the asteroids are sufficiently thick (you'd make sure the first time) that would take care of the radiation. For added measure, use the electromagnetic field generator for a deflector shield.

Or make an Aldrin Cycler out of the NEOs.

Gravatar Psychic projection anyone?

Gravatar Hi Elle,
I'll be keeping an eye out for him. The series is quite good, though this weeks plot seemed a little weak or even rushed.

Gravatar Hi dad2059,
ION drives are fine for small satellites or unmanned spacecraft, but if we want to float something more substantial that can carry a crew of 50 or 100, we are going to need considerably more energy & thrust

PS - Once the spaceship is accelerated, slowing down is considerably easier than current science predicts. But I'm giving no secrets away here.

Gravatar Hi Pandabonium,
we can travel with the mind,
but it is not always easy to get the body to follow. Currently we are looking at conventional modes of transport, you know like pedal power, cars, lifts, ocean liners, jumbo jets and Interplanetary Spacecraft - it is still going to be a while before we can dream of Interstellar Travel or Starships.
