stem cells... I have always wondered, why nature chose to 'not regenerate' an organism infinitely? Because it will lead to a stale planet? infinite capacity to regenerate combined with reproduction could have ultimately resulted in a literal 'dog eat dog' situation with everything alive, nothing dying and all resources exhausted except the sun?
Mey be the future is Immortality and no reproduction, but only regeneration?

Dark matter... I HAVE TO read more on it... I remember the post about gravitational lensing. Do we have any other proof of its existance?

thanks for the info on drosophila-it clarifies a few things give in my school book.

will the redshift of a galaxy be affected when it interacts with another galaxy coming in the opposite direction(towards the earth)??

Gravatar I saw a little girl in McDonalds over the weekend, and she was so precious. She had light brunette hair, strands were coming out of her loosely-tied ponytail, and her laugh and smile were infectious. She ran up to a slightly older boy and said, "Come play with me." It was so cute and she eventually got the boy to play with her.

Well, I want to have a little contest called "Battle of the Bloggers." I wrote about it last week, and my readers were less-than-enthusiastic about the contest. I cannot be entered myself, but I want to host a competiton that, more than anything, will expose me and others to good blogs that we don't know about to date. Please visit my blog at http://dsmoya31410.blogspot.com to see the details. So if you want to nominate a blog for this competition, please do so. I don't really care who wins; I just want to know about quality blogs. Sorry if this looks like spam. I am just trying to spread the word.

Gravatar Greetings Quasar! Was time to catch up to my favorite space traveler!

Beautiful pictures as always. Interesting info on stem cells.

hugs!

Gravatar Hi Casper, everything according to Nature would appear to have a life cycle or lifespan
However human population explosions can be limited by war and natural disaster - but other than in China & India, and 'Muslim world' - society has seen birth rate dop since the introduction of 'voluntary' birth control methods.
One could say societies that enjoy the benefits of birth control have sown the seed of their own demise, or at least hegemony in numbers, though the US, the EU and Japan would still presume to have hegemony at least in technological advances and 'national wealth' - it will be interesting to see what China & India develop into by say 2050 when individual incomes and GDP rise to US & EU levels.

On Dark Matter I cannot say much other than some 'evidence' from gravitational lensing, and according to some calculations the disparity between visible matter and expected total mass.
As to what dark matter may actually turn out to be, it remains to be 'seen' - whether star dust or some new form of particles they be.
The curious thing is that this paper posits that whilst energy transfers occur, some 'mass' transfers do not.

Gravatar Hi Vishesh, the 'speed' of two celestial bodies or galaxies travelling in opposite directions towards each other - and colliding, or interacting - is 'bound' to change their speed or direction.

Gravatar Hi Leesa, thanks for the news about your blogger competition.
Can I recommend two blogs in your comments box, or must I follow the rules of the competition and g-mail them to you.

Glad to see ya still blogging and wearing gee-mail, gotta be more fun that chainmail, lol!

Gravatar Wow katie, magical & breath taking
"white water making" - Nature's way of purifying and refreshing the waters of life.

Gravatar Hi Q,

People only have to replace themselves (the 2.1 birth rate)... That has been observed to be the case in places where literacy is high. In places where the literacy is low, they seem to have not realized that since mortality rates have gone down, one need not and should not have more children... But in general, the rate of growth is slowing down, but I guess that the effects of whatever rate is there at present, remains to be seen.

EU seems to have less than 2.1 birth rate! and the US seems to be bang on 2.1....

I hope education catches up and settles things down...

Gravatar Hi Casper, I agree we no longer have the 'primordial' pressures or need to proliferate as fast as we can, for the tribe to 'survive' - but call it the selfish gene if you will, some of us men are keen to see our seed grow and multiply.
It is some 'enlightened' women are less keen to be used repeatedly as breeding reactors - other are still motivated by culture, tradition or the so called motherly instincts inbred into them from generation to generation (survival instincts?).

In a free society one can not determine what is right for others. China tried to regulate its birth rate by penalising couples who had more than one child - whereas other societies have at various stages encouraged or promoted population growth.
I think in India the culture among the 'poorer' is still the agrarian belief that the more children and grandchildren, the better (more comfortable) one's retirement and old age is assured to be.
Survival instints? Selfish interest? or just Nature's way and individual choice.
But remember two hundred years ago when we had less than a third of today's population, population growth was alreasy deemed by some as unsustainable.

Gravatar true that we cant determine what is right for others... and others are all very valid points too Q...
makes one scratch the head

Gravatar Sleep was not my friend last night, so I tried to coax it to me by turning on the TV and drifting off. It didn't work.
The reason it didn't work was because I turned the TV to the Discovery Channel. They did a show on this very subject, Dark Matter. And instead of making me sleepy, it completely grabbed my attention.
I have to wonder, since 90% of the Universe is unseen, what's out there? Is the 90% unseen nothing but Dark Matter?
You tell me, Q.

Gravatar Hi Casper, the Cosmos will do as the cosmos pleases
How people act we can influence, starting with ourselves - and equally how we affect the planet has an effect on how the planet (and cosmic forces) react.

Gravatar Hi Hill Country Gal,
we wouldn't want the Universe to be solid matter - but the matter that is speculated to exist is by enlarge dark or non-visible matter. Hence we see each individual little light from every visible star.

The Earth has continents and vast oceans or seas, and we know that though less solid than continental mass, there is much 'matter' floating in the oceans and thru the atmosphere too

Gravatar Hi Quasar,
Lots for me to read and learn. I will be back later today For now I wonder if you are interested to clear things up in an on-going discussion between Americans and Europeans on "Global Warming" at MuseArt? Here is a short road:

Gravatar Hi Anna-lys
Thanks for the short cut
brainstorming aliens causing a 'stir' lol!
