Gravatar Hubble has certainly been worth its money.

Gravatar Out of interest- why are we assuming dark matterr to be mostly non baryonic?

Gravatar Hi Nessa,
Art for Art sake, and money for Science sake. Everything we see around us is because someone has tried to 'reach' further and faster. From the internet almost at the speed of light, to telescopes seeking the far & distant parts of the Universe.

Gravatar Hi Crushed,
"Dark matter is not made of the same stuff that stars, planets, and people are made of. That stuff is normal "baryonic" matter, consisting of electrons, protons, and neutrons. For 80 years astronomers have known about dark matter's "ghostly" pull on normal matter."

ie: something which cannot be measured or detected by other means than by its 'ghostly pulled'

Gravatar Yes, but I'm speculating on what that might be. I had kind of always assumed that brown dwarfs and the like would account for much of it. But that, of course, is baryonic matter.

Are we talking neutrinos and the like?

Gravatar Or are we talking about particles that terrestrial science has yet to identify because current technology lacks the means to track them?

So many if not most galaxies (small ones, at least) are surrounded by an invisible barrier. It's kind of an interesting coincidence that, in the original Star Trek, the Milky Way galaxy was said to be surrounded by an energy barrier that was difficult and dangerous for a starship to penetrate. Visually, they always showed the "barrier" as looking something like a violent, glowing nebula, meaning it was more like matter than energy as such.

Was Gene Roddenberry psychic?

Gravatar Oh, I'm sooo glad you are still here.
It has been a really long time, too long 4 me, but I'm Back! so come visit me...

Gravatar A well informed post as always Q9. Unfortunately, I've not been able to post a comment on your new Cambridge site. It doesn't like my blog site url.

Gravatar How come that dark spots in universe and humans are so much more interesting to anna-lyze than the visible light ones?
