People ended up getting their names changed at Ellis island here because some times there was no way the people in charge there could spell some of the names that they saw and heard! Then the immigrants changed them further.

True. One of my teachers changed my first name. Didn't feel the need to consult anyone about it either. It stuck...all the way through school. My mother thought that things would be easier for me with it...she never pursued it. The fact of the matter is that they could have named me Betty or Lucy, but I still look like a Radmila or a Bianca or a (insert ethnic name here). Calling me something else wasn't fooling anyone
