That sound about right. My nieces call themselves 'Muslim-American', not 'Pakistani-American'. The result is that they reject their parents while at the same time proclaiming seperateness from the dominant culture. Same type of thing in Canada.
One unique American wrinkle (vis-avis Canada) is the presence of orthodox Black-Muslims. Despite efforts from both sides, Black-Muslim identity remains separate from non-black Muslim identity, mirroring the same type of divide American Baptists and Methodists have.
In the same way Indian-Muslims adopted the Indian concept of caste, despite scriptural prohibitions, American Muslims will likely incorporate the US's signature racial divide. Birth of Nation, I guess.
