Perhaps they can ultimately redefine the taxonomy of disease itself! After all, many of these diseases are defined simply as clusters of symptoms without a deep understanding of the underlying pathology. Once our knowledge is more complete, it may make more sense to classify things according to the damaged pathways or mechanisms rather than talk about the manifestation.

Thank you very much for posting about this article. I work in neurodegenerative drug discovery; ALS specifically. Though not featured exclusively in the publication like Autism was, ALS analyses are included in their supplementary materials. The findings are intriguing and very exciting to me. It will take me some time to wrap my brain around the mathematical modelling, but I do feel like this publication is a gold mine of insight. Thank you for bringing it to our attention!
