Actually, if you take government revenue as a per cent of GDP as an indicator of state intervention in society, you will find that as state intervention increases so does per capita GDP. Wealthier nations have more government intervention. Some of the nations with the best human development scores have the most active governments, Norway and Sweden, for example.
