razib i am tone deaf, and the idea that people would select against my kind when considering their offspring is an affront to my human rights! imagine how many razibs we may lose! the horror!Email | Homepage | 08.07.07 - 3:43 pm | # |

jaspa Imagine if Beethoven as a child was told that his genetics suggested he would have hearing problems in adult life and therefore should not take up music.Email | Homepage | 08.08.07 - 5:40 am | # |

pconroy My brother is tone deaf and left handed - but it never stopped him from being a fairly good piano player - though a lousy singer.Email | Homepage | 08.08.07 - 9:10 am | # |

bioIgnoramus My mother claimed to be tone deaf, recognising tunes purely by their rhythm. She was a good dancer, though. I am not tone deaf but my wife claims that she can recognise tunes that I "sing" solely from the rhythm. Question: is my inability to produce notes with any precision - even though I can hear pitch perfectly well - related to my mother's condition?Email | Homepage | 08.08.07 - 9:31 am | # |

Sandgroper LOL! I gave up on my dream of taking Venus Williams as my second wife and spawning a generation of brilliant multi-coloured tennis players some time back.Email | Homepage | 08.08.07 - 10:04 am | # |

Spike Gomes Back in junior high and high school I took those gigantic banks of tests to determine what career path I should follow. It suggested as its three most likely "Mason, Drywaller and Forest ranger."Email | Homepage | 08.08.07 - 1:44 pm | # |

Tracy I wonder if perfect pitch runs in families too. Wikipedia says reports are mixed whether it is more learned or genetic.Email | Homepage | 08.09.07 - 7:43 pm | # |

Sandgroper Tracy - My daughter was born with perfect pitch. She won first prize in a solo singing competition out of 74 secondary schools, and was a qualified piano teacher by the age of 15. We never pushed her, she just does it because she loves it. But she doesn't want to be a musician or music teacher, she wants to be a medical practitioner.Email | Homepage | 08.10.07 - 10:23 pm | # |
