Yes, tomatoes are good with basil... but wouldn't it be easier just to sprinkle a little basil on the tomato? The two even grow together well.

They've gone to a lot of unnecessary trouble - to get better tasting and smelling tomatoes, all you have to do is grow them yourself instead of buying them.....then sprinkle with basil as above.

In the US, most tomatoes sold whole/fresh in stores are what in Europe are known as "Beef Tomatoes" - and used strictly for cooking, not putting in salads or eating raw. Beef tomatoes are large, fleshy and with fewer seeds than eating tomatoes.
Same goes for chocolate of course - most chocolate sold in stores in the US is poorer quality than cooking chocolate in Europe.
The only tomatoes I have found in the New York area that are anything like the tasty eating tomatoes of Europe are called "Jersey Tomatoes" - usually only sold at farmer's markets.
