You want to talk about information processing you need to consider the cellular nucleus. Tons of information processing going on there, and we're just beginning to understand just how much, and of what kind. And this goes on all the time. What we see in interneuronal, interglial, and neuron-glial communications is just a part of it. And keep in mind that a neuron is so occupied with information processing it literally can't feed itself, it has to be fed by astrocytes. Those neurotransmitters aren't simple signals, they're data packets being sent from computer to computer through an internet of a complexity that makes ours look downright basic.
In generations to come our descendents are going to look back on what we said about brain functioning and tell their kids, "You want to talk about hubris?"
