Are you sure it is not just the effect of a very low protein diet?

The people in that picture look well fed. I don't know about the protein consumption, per se, but it's usually disruptions caused by war and drought that make people hungry in the modern world, so I doubt that's it.

Um, melanesians are the most genetically diverged and dissimilar group from SS africans. Aborigines and Papuans are grouped in with that, and technically, Melanesians are just southeast asians. Why do these articles say they're so "ancient"? I think these migratory waves absorbed and displaced some ancient african populations out there, but why say this? And how dissimilar were these orignal african populations from modern day ones?

the presumption is a lot of wave I out-of-africa ancestry is still extant among the 'papuan' groups.

I was surprised by the number of blonds/albinos I saw when I went to Indonesia, and there did seem to be more as I moved further east into the more Melanesian parts (though I saw at least one blond in Bali, and yes I'm sure he wasn't a tourist).

Human females from differing habitats the world over have been known to alter their apparent hair color by artificial means in order to suggest reproductive fitness. (Results vary.)
In the New York City habitat, I once saw an African-American female with red hair. This unusual variation came out of a bottle. It usually does, shockingly racist and reactionary as that may sound.
An interesting twist is artificially to alter the color of one's irises by means of a device known as a contact lens. I merely heard about this - I can't verify it and I don't believe it. No one could be that devious or so lacking in self-confidence about his or her appearance.

exactly! that is why blondism in melanesia is concentrated among fecund pre-pubescent baby-makers! too bad those pre-teen blond males don't understand that they can't increase their fitness that way....

in solomon islands, the % of blondes is very high in certain islands, particularly malaita and isabel. We dont (until recently) bleach hair, we darken it instead for special events. my kids are well fed but all of them are blonde, including my nieces and nephews. Just do a search on google and you'll be surprised.
