It's interesting that Anglo Saxons are often perceived as wussy; but they tend to win the wars. And the big wars are against their close kin, Germans.

Organizational ability, economics and technology likely play a greater role than "toughness". I don't know what the topic of this post is because I just clicked on "Recent comments".

Basically, if you figure out an "unbeatable" strategy at winning a game, you are screwed when the rules change
The same concept for genetic diversity of a population apply here. an strategy vs diverse strategies for a group. Single allele vs multiple allelles for a pupulation.
Lack of diverse alleles is like population with inbred.

I don't understand why you see this result as a non-ESS situation. ESS are stable mixed strategies (i.e. probability distributions over "single" strategies that remain stable from one generation to the next). They are indifferent about whether this occurs through each individual using the same mixed strategy, or the correct proportions of individuals using different pure strategies. All that counts is that, at any contest, every pure ("single") strategy should appear with the "correct" probability.
Basically, the presence of polymorphism within a population is entirely compatible with an ESS situation, no?

yes. i'm saying that the particular mix of polymorphisms is contingent upon exogenous forces (e.g., environment, culture, etc.). an ESS for env A != ESS for env B.
