The War on Scarves! There is a dynamic about the keffiyeh among loony neocon/zionists, much like the rightists who called the ANC terrorists while supporting apartheid era South Africa. It's symbolic of the people they do not wish to understand as it might threaten their very simplistic worldview. It's an emblem of the 'other' outside the empire's walls.
However in the real world I would reckon the majority of people wearing it have no knowledge or awareness of its cultural roots (and if they are well done for visibly raising awareness) so in this instance they are tilting at windmills. Although it can also be a deliberate move to suppress awareness (did any US media mention the Nakba in relation to the 60th Israeli anniversay?) and to imply anyone wearing one is evil, so a broadly racist intent (nothing unusual there from Malkin). I doubt Ray knows the PLO from D&G.
They have already waged a war against handkerchiefs used to cover the head (the type my mother has used for ages) and now its tattered scarves. What's next? Falafels?
