Obama likes to talk about his support for "the middle class," but the truth is, a broadly-affluent middle class was made possible by widely-available and reasonably-priced energy, especially in the form of electricity.

Without low-cost energy, it is still possible to have a small and very wealthy aristocracy, but not a large and affluent middle class.
