I think Wills has an axe to grind on this topic. he should know that many presidential spouses have had active roles in the white house. Eleanor Roosevelt, Edith Wilson, and Nancy Reagan are fine examples. Some spouses took a more passive role, Bess Truman is an example.

This happened in 1992 when Clinton ran initially. This meme throughout the media was concern about Hillary Clinton's role in the White House. It just seems to me that they are repeating it with Bill Clinton.

To me, that is the real problem with the op-ed.

For another take, read Frank Rich in this morning's (1/27) NYT's "Week in Review" (p.17). I do get worried when I think that the Dems could lose this next election. On a (sort of) related matter, there also appears, in the same section, Caroline Kennedy's "A President Like My Father".
