Did you know that there is a religous group in this country that doens't stand for anthem, say the pledge nor do they put their hands over their heart. Beside the next time you want a football game. It's not required that you place your hand on your heart during the playing of the National Anthem. You do stand however. When reciting the Pledge of Allegiance you put your hand over your heart, which may be why many people also do it during the Anthem. At least this is what I learned in my country one-room grade school.

FIrst of all, he was the only one of the candidates that I could see actually SINGING the anthem, and was completely engaged in listening to the performer and to the anthem. I'd much rather see someone fully engaged in the moment, as he obviously was, than someone who focuses on getting their hand in the opportune photo-op place.
Second, it looked to me that John Edwards also may not have had his hand on his heart (though, since he was photographed from the side, this could easily be missed).
Third, I am tired of these absurdly superficial tests of pseudo-patriotisim. I don't care where people put their hands during the National Anthem, or where and when they wear flag pins. What I want is someone who will not only "uphold" but FIGHT FOR, our Constitution, and for the rule of law. Bush and Cheney never fail to get their hands over their hearts, and to look properly solemn, during the National Anthem, but they have trashed our Constitution and brought our democracy to the very brink of disaster.

You don't have to place your hand over your heart, but you should stand in a respectful manner. Not casually, especially if you are trying to convey the message that you want to be the leader of the United States of America. Omaba has little to no respect for patriotism so it doesn't matter. His attitude towards those who wear a flag lapel pin and now his casual attitude towards are anthem are, if nothing else, consistent.

I have no clue as to what this is all about. I was never taught to put my hand over my heart during the national anthem. I was taught to stand at attention. For the pledge I was taught to put my hand over my heart.

I'm sure that we considered the thousands of times that any one politician has stood through the anthem we'd find dozens of them that forgot on one occasion or another.

The Military while in civilian clothes has to put their hand over their heart, but it is a custom for Senators and other government personel to do same. He should've known this could be an issue.

I find this article completely ridiculous. Just because Barack Obama does not want to wear some tacky U.S. pin or put his hand over his heart during the national anthem, that does not mean he has anything whatsoever against this country. Has it ever occured to any conservatives out there that wearing some shiny piece of plastic on your breast looks absolutely ridiculous? All the protocol says is to "stand upright and respectful" which, as far as I can see, is exactly what Obama is doing. I, for instance, never say the pledge. Why? Hand over your heart became the rule after '93. The 1942 handbook says hands at your side, but hand over heart for the pledge, which is what he learned from his grandfather.

Unfortunately, in many schools today, children are NOT taught the National Anthem or the Pledge of Allegiance. The word "God" is a religious word and so most schools have discarded the morning Pledge of Allegiance. Children are NOT taught patriotism anymore. My daughter was never taught in school...I had to teach her. But, then, her elementary teacher also taught her that Martin Luther King freed the slaves....

I am an Air Force Veteran. I was taught that there is a code for the national anthem. If you are a military man in uniform you face the flag and salute, if you're not in uniform or a civilian you face the flag and place your right hand over your heart. We all stood in a respectful way, watched the flag, and some (like Obama) would sing along quietly.
I suppose it might be a flag code violation, but it's perfectly normal. And it's not like we take the flag code all that seriously - our current president signs flags, we wear flag t-shirts, etc.
Show the flag and the anthem respect. It's a simple principal and I don't see anything in the video that makes me thing Mr. Obama doesn't.
This pretty much shows the main difference between dems and republicans. How many dems do you know that fly the American flag outside of their houses?? Get it??
During rendition of the national anthem when the flag is displayed, all present except those in uniform should stand at attention facing the flag with the right hand over the heart. Men not in uniform should remove their headdress with their right hand and hold it at the left shoulder, the hand being over the heart. -- United States Code, Title 36, Chapter 10, Sec. 171
Would I like to see ALL Americans place their hand over their hearts evry time the anthem is played (by the way I do it at home -- even if I'm alone)-- but he was the ONLY one singing. Are the others traitors for not even knowing the words?
Well i know its not required to put your hand over your heart but come onnn. your standing on a stage with all these people who have there hands over there hearts and your the only one whos going to stand there with your hands at your side? A little common sense please.
if his is what you want as your next president he should have atleast some respect towards the country he is running for. ... not to mention how he made fun of the bible ... i know hes not catholic nor christian but doesnt give him the right to do that .. its not like i going to go around making fun of his reliegion or whatever he is ... treat people equally and with RESPECT!

I know I have not always done things "correctly" in my life. Having just had twins and a tremendous lack of sleep, I have no memory of the first 6 months. I can only imagine what is has been like for both of the candidates these long months. I think it is important to not "jump" to conclusions about this. People say they love their kids and then beat them. People say they love America and then have no tolerance for "others", or are racist, etc... I think it is more important to look at things overall. You may just not like the man because he is a Democrat and your a Republican or he is black and you are white, but I don't think this is a reason to beat someone up.
