Remember the PNAC, the neocon plan hatched over a decade ago and including Iraq and Iran in its gun sights that used the term "with a new Pearl Harbor" to further its effects?Strangely enough, the first conversation Bush had with Blair after 9/11 (according to the new Blair book) he said that this was this century's Pearl Harbor. I thought that was strange and perhaps coincidental. It does seem that efforts are being made to push confrontations and I do not trust this admnistration and their minions at all. "The credibility at least of the administration has taken a hit by the way this episode played out," Aftergood said, but the near-confrontation could provide an opportunity for Bush to learn from his mistakes.

If the Bush administration and Pentagon manufactured this incident in the Strait of Hormuz in order to dupe the American people into accepting their pro-Iran war agenda, they clearly aren't fighting "to protect American democracy."
To the contrary, lying to the American people, even if done for what is genuinely considered our own good, shows absolute contempt for the concept of democracy-- which makes them not its protectors but its domestic enemies. G.I. | Homepage | 01.11.08 - 6:10 pm Direct link to this comment

This whole affair is just another one of those quirky coincidences that seem to be so common place with the Bush administration (like up grading the security threat whenever it was politically expedient to do so).
Bush needed a springboard topic for his Middle East visit this week and what better topic than a hyped up incident to blame those evil Iranians for. TomInMaine | Homepage | 01.11.08 - 7:25 pm Direct link to this comment
A friend of mine was a Navy jet fighter pilot flying air cover during the Gulf of Tonkin incident that was used as a pretext to get us into the Viet Nam war.
He saw the hoax for what it was during his air cover mission. The following are the recollections he sent me a couple years ago based his flight logbook and what he saw while on patrol.
"We pilots on the Ticonderoga were briefed about the Desoto patrols but not any of the other operations underway at the time. We were told that the Maddox (and maybe the Turner Joy) were going to follow North Vietnam's coastline at the 3 mile limit. Three miles by the way was what the US uses to define international waters whereas North Vietnam and many other countries use 13(?) miles.
I was flying F8 Crusaders and that airplane was primarily used for air to air cover for the fleet but this day, instead of air-air Sidewinder missiles, we were loaded with air to ground unguided Zunis and were going to practice firing them at a sled being towed about 1000 yards behind the aircraft carrier. Sounded like a gift to me as they never let us do that account of the expense...except that we had been briefed about the Maddox's operation. A sled is a metal surfboard that produces a good size wake simulating the wake of a ship which would give us a good aiming point. This was clue #2 that we were setting up a situation where we could justify an attack on N.V. The alleged attack on the Maddox occurred when another 2 Crusaders were airborne, again with Zunis instead of Sidewinders. Oddly, the section comprised of one F8 from my squadron, VF-51, flown by Ltjg Dick Hastings, killed the next year, and a LCDR from VF-53 our the sister squadron who I don't remember. My wingman was a Ltjg also from VF-53 but I don't remember who and it's not recorded in my pilots logbook. Don't remember them mixing us before and don't know what that was about. As I was briefing the other pilot someone from the Admiral's staff (also unusual to have the Admiral on board) came in to tell us that the Maddox was being fired on and the F8's were sent in response. That's what we did too, only I never saw and PT boats. I've seen reports that the weather was bad with limited visibility and that's why there was sighting problems but that just wasn't true. There was a high overcast but visibility was quite good underneath.
Our cycles from takeoff to landing were about 1.8 hours so we must have toured around looking for those boats for up to an hour but we never saw any. Saw lots of Sampans but PT boats are much bigger, and even if they were dead-in-the-water, they would have been easy to see. The Maddox vectored us around and we spent time "over" the PT boats but could not spot them.
The next night the Turner Joy was "attacked." When our C.O. CDR Stockdale heard of this he grabbed the airplane away from a junior officer and launched. It was one of the black nights and a black night at sea, esp if there is an overcast is beyond the sort of black we are familiar with.
Same drill as August 4th. He and a wingman were vectored around and of course he did not see anything but just blindly fired his guns, Zunis and even Sidewinders! Even if there was anything there he would not have hit it.
Incidentally, in the 10/31/05 issue of the SF Chronicle there was an article reporting that the events of the night of August 5th never happened.
Seems to me the whole thing was a setup by the USA." Treetopflyer | Homepage | 01.11.08 - 8:16 pm Direct link to this comment

Is anyone really surprised by this? An "event" is always concocted and the upcoming war with Iran is no different. Haven't you noticed that we've been arming the Sunnis and signing up thousands of them for their "neighborhood protection" brigades.
Once the Sunnis are sufficiently armed and ready to go, we'll be able to turn our attention on Iran without having to worry about the Shiites giving us too much trouble in Iraq - they'll have a fully armed Sunni civil war to worry about.
I suspect that this would have happened already but the problem with the Kurds and the PKK had threated to remove our only friend in the region.
today New York Times has an article about how military is now re-investigating war games it held in 2002 wherin small Iranian boats swarmed in and inflicted mass damage on an American fleat. They are chilled that last week's incident was so similar.
Beware of simulated doomsday scenerios that are played out just prior to the "Real" thing.
Of course the State propaganda rag, the NYT is in the la-la land of the 9/11 mytholgy so they are oblivious to the fact that in two of the major "terorist" attacks that happened--9/11 and 7/7--games were being played at the exact same time depicting the exact same events that were happening in real time.
It is a FACT that the Navy was unbothered by the Iranian swift boat "incident", in other words they didn't see it as an incident at all, but as a routine "their boats pased by our boats" scenerio.
Everything that happened afterwards is pure fear mongering and saber rattling by the government and the press and of course both in conjunction. So why is the NYT running this article a week after the fact; dumping emotions and reactions that didn't exist when it was happening? Because we're getting prepped. I have no reason to believe Iran. Google Iran's video of the event and you'll see an individual trying to establish if the "warship" is in international waters. Now, not saying if this is true, would the US try to elicit a response from the Iranian patrol boats by brushing the line? Ya think? Dude | Homepage | 01.12.08 - 11:48 am Direct link to this comment

It is all a false flag operation (Israel/U.S.). U.S. Special Forces have been doing this since Vietnam. Lt. Col. Daniel Marvin was called upon to kill the Crown Prince of Cambodia to make it look like a Viet Cong assassination. He refused. Then he was asked to assassinate Martin Luther King Jr. He refused again. (Some of us really know who killed MLK and Kennedy [Kennedy was assassinated by the Mossad for refusing to let Israel develop the A-bomb]). Fraud US-Style: Fake Videos and Elections
by Stephen Lendman
First the videos with bin Laden ones Exhibit A. He always seems to pop up strategically at well-timed moments, almost like we planned it that way. Evidence points that way.
Consider the one on Friday (September 7) before the sixth 9/11 anniversary in 2007. Digital image forensics expert, Neal Krawetz of Hactor Factor, said it was full of low quality visual and audio splices, a likely fake. Striking also was bin Laden's beard that was gray in recent images. In this video, it's black. In addition, the footage has him dressed in a white hat and shirt and yellow sweater, precisely his same attire on an October 29, 2004 video. In addition, the background, lighting, desk and camera angle are the same.
Krawetz noted that "if you overlay the 2007 and 2004 videos, bin Laden's face is the same (unaged). Only his beard is darker, and the picture contrast was adjusted. Most important are the edits showing obvious splices, at least six video ones in all. Even more audio ones were used that appear to be words and phrases spliced together making Krawetz suspect a vocal imitator was used.
Now the latest "incident" and video making headlines...
Having been a Naval Officer during the Vietnam war, I can say that life aboard ship is so boring that a little tussle with some speedboats can spice up the day. From my perspective, this Strait of Hormuz incident sounds like a sea story. Anyone who has served on Navy destroyers would have serious questions about many aspects of this event. What do the ships' logs say? These documents aren't supposed to record a pack of lies. Who took the videos and did the editing? What instructions did the editor receive? What reports were made to the chain of command? If other events like this occurred, why did this particular one receive national attention? As kneejerk as it may be for the left in America to suspect the motives of the Bush administration, and with good reason, the fact is that the president of Iran's popularity has plunged since the nuclear weapons issue lost some of its steam. Like it or not, no politician, not even the lameduck George Bush, has more reason to divert attention by fomenting a crisis than Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. 1) How is our questioning of the administration's motives "kneejerk" if, as you acknowledge, we have "good reason" for doing so?
2) And, if it's true that noone had more reason to divert attention than Ahmadinjad, how does that exculpate BushCo, the party which presumably still had the second most to gain? At the least, it's a win/win for both in their arguably most cherished criterion: maintaining personal power. G.I. | Homepage | 01.12.08 - 3:28 pm Direct link to this comment
To Brenda above: of course ships came close, noone is saying otherwise (very narrow & busy strait of water, after all; in fact, when Bush 1st sent fleet over many warned incidents like this were bound to occur) - only that Bush and the Pentagon are making WAY more out of this than they should.
Note the response of the US military on the scene - pretty restrained & treated as routine 'ships passing' - and properly so. It was only when Cheney and the Pentagon got wind that this began to get so exaggerated. govtimbo | Homepage | 01.12.08 - 3:41 pm Direct link to this comment

Buzzing speedboats is no excuse for starting a war with Iran.
We did not go to war with Israel after they actually attacked and killed 34 and wounded 173 of our servicemen on the U.S.S. Liberty in 1967.
