SCROLL DOWN TO POST YOUR COMMENT. INCLUDE CITY & STATE FOR OBSERVATIONS.

The remnants of Ida can be considered a "smackdown" given the amount of precipitation and the drawing in of NW air dropping the temps. Ponding of water, coastal flooding, etc. are major problems to contend with in any storm. As far as being a "major smackdown" remains to be seen, as such terms are associated with disastrous weather. So, depending on where you live and the effect of the weather on your area, the term "major smackdown" is relative.
Nope, no data - mere observations

No data from me; and I am not sure what this storm really presents so far as future weather patterns. No question the pattterns are changing, but looking ahead this current pattern of high and low temps seems to be forecast right through December.
Time will tell, but I sure am in the mood to store my early fall clothes and break out the warmer stuff.

Looks like dry warmer weather to continue for the foreseeable future.

We have to wait for the vortex over Alaska to retrograde to the SW before we can talk about any type of pattern change. As long as its well below normal in AK, we will continue to see at or above normal temps in the eastern US. Good news is that the computer models are starting to show that vortex moving SW to the Aleutians in 11-15 days. That'd mean a smackdown in terms of temperatures for the East.

Beware though, this mundane (except the Ida remnants wreaking havoc in the MA) pattern will continue until that retrograde happens. I agree with Mr. Foot because by 12/1 to 12/5, we will be tossed into winter. Enjoy the 50s and 60s while they last.

Snow and cold just a few weeks away!

Looking at all of the warnings, advisories and hazardous weather outlooks that NWS has issued for the past 48 or more hours, could be evidence of a "smackdown" event. I do think that the nature of this storm was rare and uniquely powerful. However,I tend to think that "smackdown" events keep thousands of people from doing thier regular life's activities. I am not sure this will fit the bill as the "smackdown" traits are more localized to the immediate coastal areas of the Mid-Atlantic.

Many thanks to the respondents for your insightful answers. I truly enjoy the spirit of collaborative discussion and objectiveness we;ve cultivated here over the years. It is my hope that this coming winter, our efforts will help raise the quality and effectiveness of this site so that there is equal access to all Maryland students.

I would like to formally ask for the help of anyone in our discussion community with the next step in that endeavor. Please read carefully:

The web Content Committee of Baltimore County Public Schools will is about to conducting a review of the site to consider it's appropriateness for student access and whether the site merits being unblocked in county schools. I am requesting the assistance of any fellow educators, parents or students in performing our own internal review of the site according to the BCPS Educational Guidelines for Evaluation of Websites.

Today I am posting on the site a Word 97-2000 attachment containing the criteria, and designed in a manner that enables our reviewers support their evaluation with an example of each point. Please know that if you wish to help me with this effort, you are welcome to do as much or as little of the evaluation as you wish. You all have very busy lives as it is, so there's no need to do this immediately.

There are several methods by which we can accomplish this:

1. Readers can look over the questions, and respond here with which ones they are willing to assume responsibility for answering.

2. A few select people can assume tha task of doing the entire form, then we can list all responses to each question together for comparison.

3. We can leave it open ended, you can choose to do as much as you like, and all responses to each question are listed together.

Accountability and Privacy:
For anyone participating, I will ask your permission to simply post your call sign, location and occupation next to your response. This being an internal review, we can't exactly do a "double-blind" study, however may also involve someone not as famiiar with the site if you believe that would provide the necessary objectivity.

Participant Diversity
It would be ideal to achieve a wide range of participants, including:

-Teachers from BCPS as well as other public or private school systems in Maryland;
-K-12 Students with BCPS as well as other systems in Maryland and elsewhere in the Mid-Atlantic;
-Parents of school-age students;
-Professionals in government or private industry not involved with a school system;

Anyone interested in joining this endeavor is welcome to respond here in the comments, or privately via email: rfoot@bcps.org

Thank you for reading. If you would like to participate, please let me know by end of the weekend.

I can help if needed.

Rich, you know you can count me in for any help necessary to get the site back online for BCPS.

Count me in. It drives me crazy that your site is blocked at work!
