Oh, thank you for your movie reviews. I have to tell you, you nailed every single one of my quibbles with Happy Feet, even the ones that I couldn't articulate clearly.
I went with a friend (and we squealed a lot over the HP:OOP trailer, which we are way too old for) because she wanted to see it and her husband didn't, and I wanted to preview it before taking my kids. Thank goodness I did - the trailers I had seen just had the dancing, which led me to expect a happy fluffy Disney kids' movie, but then there was all the racist crap with Robin Williams's characters, and the muddled messages, not to mention the bits with the sea lion that were very scary! Definitely not a good choice for my 4-year-old daughter.
Also - how long was Mumbles away? He seemed to keep his baby feathers much longer than practically possible, and that really niggled at the back of my brain. Along with all the other baggage we've already mentioned.
I will keep an eye out for Stranger Than Fiction. I haven't heard anything about it, but your review makes it sound like something I would really enjoy.

I saw Stranger Than Fiction last night and really enjoyed it. Both my parents, though, were disappointed, thought it was "weird," thought it would be funnier . . . I loved its offbeat real/fiction overlap.

we had considered taking the kids to see HF but everyone we know that has seen it said it was a political film, less about the kids than the getting across of a message. Bummer! Can't kids just see a fun film without being indoctrinated into the world of politics?

I loved Stranger Than Fiction too. It was actually my 14 yo son's idea to see it. I haven't heard a good review of Happy Feet yet. Sorry I'm so behind in my commenting!

I took Claire to Happy Feet on Saturday. Her first movie theatre experience. In the end, I'm glad she was really too young to "get" it because I think it would have really been a bummer if she was a bit older. As it was, only I felt depressed and unfulfilled and she came home saying "Daddy! Me see penguins! They sing! Big TV!"
If I had been up on my blog reading I would have known better and taken her to something else, for my sake. My bad.
