Gravatar "Now is the time for Georgia and Russia to show restraint, and to avoid an escalation to full scale war. Georgia’s territorial integrity must be respected. "

Um, yeah, those tanks have already settled that.

Gravatar Maybe another autobiography would suffice!!
Dreams of himself? Mayhaps?
This douche bag is not ready to defend himself.

Gravatar you have to understand....

he is not yet in a position to issue a strongly worded communique.

Gravatar Hmmm, I think this is one of those instances in which we have to tread very carefully. The borders between these two countries have been in conflict for centuries, and the two provinces involved have a huge Russian majority that actually wants to belong to Russia instead of Georgia. So both sides have reason to fight, because, like in most of Europe, the borders have gone back and forth for centuries, and so have the ethnic groups living in them. These flares will continue endlessly now that Russia is no longer holding the reigns. I see it as sort of inevitable.

None of this will be solved in our lifetime. It seems NATO is the only hope to make the region somewhat stable again, because we can't do it and shouldn't even if Georgia is an ally. The U.N. has proven time and again that it's totally useless.

Imagine two of our states with a majority of American Indians. They want to form their own countries again. Would we let them do that without a fight? Wasn't that what the civil war war sort of all about? If you lived in a state like that, would you be willing to give up all your property and rights to become a citizen of a new country in which you are a minority and might disagree with the whole government?

I'd be out there fighting, and so would every other red-blooded person, even knowing that whatever we win will be temporary because the dispute will continue ad infinitum.

These are ongoing problems that have to be settled by diplomacy with pressure from the rest of the world towards peace, but no military action. It's a tricky position to be in, and all Obama can really do is "say words". He's not in a position yet, or ever will be, to do anything else.

Gravatar Actually I pretty much agree with what Obama said about this case, except I can't figure out what he means by this: "Georgia’s territorial integrity must be respected. "

What territorial integrity when these borders have been fluid for so many centuries?????? And what does he mean by "territorial integrity" when the majority of people living in those territories want to belong to Russia instead of Georgia?

It isn't that simple!!!!!
