Llet's not make Subway out to be some monster here. They are having a contest and contributing to education, but they didn't do it in the most politically correct, absolutely perfect way. How horrible.
From the article:
"The presumed rationale for the exclusion is that the grand prize is athletic equipment for a school and that “home schools” aren’t organized schools and that the equipment is intended for a community, not a family."
That doesn't seem so sinister or cold hearted. Plus maybe they wanted the publicity of a whole school getting the award.
One of the more obvious work-arounds that the developers of the Subway contest could have included for homeschooling parents who entered on their children’s behalf, was for the equipment to be donated to a local park, or to a school of the winner’s choice. Problem solved – good will all around. Too bad that it didn’t play out that way.
Sounds like a pretty good solution.
Let's not overblow this. We aren't perfect and corporations aren't either. Just because some minority interest group is offended by something that probably seemed perfectly rational to the contest designers doesn't mean Subway should be trashed.

I agree with Scott H on this one. Just because Subway made some rules (for whatever reason) doesn't mean they disapprove of home schooling, and for this home school magazine to say, "Subway hates us" is overblown and silly.
It's their contest, and they can make the rules. And why in the world everyone is so hypersensitive if the rules exclude them is beyond me. Either you believe in what you are doing or you don't, and if you believe in it then other people's rules are beside the point and have no bearing on what you do.
