Gravatar Amazing bunch we have running our government, isn't it? I wonder how the hell they sleep at night!!! :-(

Gravatar True enough!

Gravatar "Don't do as I do, do as I say."

Gravatar "i had an affair"
"beltway madam"
"pet projects added to legislation"

How 'bout...
"Power corrupts. Absolute power corrupts absolutely."

The point is, IMHO, you are weak to fall to the temptations of the flesh...or pocketbook. Expose them all and run their asses out. In history, not everyone in power has fallen to these temptations or forgotten why they are there.
Why settle?

Gravatar I thought this was common knowledge way back when. Hmmm...

Gravatar Ya know, the interesting thing is that we all know that almost all of them do this. Frankly, I don't even have a problem with it if the wife agrees for whatever her own reasons are, and many of them do agree. Ladybird Johnson was one of them who came right out and said that women are attracted to power, her husband had power, and therefore she also admitted that her husband probably didn't always avoid temptation. She took it in stride, and I think that's up to the individuals involved.

HOWEVER, what I don't like is the lying about it when it's discovered, the embarrassment it brings to the wife and the whole family in front of the whole world while he is in office, and the inexcusable stupidity of thinking their peccadilios will not be discovered, even though it's pretty plain to almost anyone that the news media loves this sort of gossip.

My question then is, Do we really want such stupid people running our government? And if they are stupid in this one area that is plain as the nose on your face to most of the rest of us, can we trust them not to be stupid about all sorts of other things too?

I don't think so!!! And that was my big problem with Clinton. Not the affairs themselves; but the lying afterwards and the thinking that he would not be caught, plus all the business of the country that was not done while he kept unzipping his pants.

I feel the same way about any politician, democrat, republican, green, or martian.

WHILE YOU ARE IN OFFICE, KEEP YOUR NOSE CLEAN AND YOUR PANTS ZIPPED! I don't give a damn what you do after you leave office.

Gravatar I don't think Gingrich had great hopes anyway as he had other past things that sound bad.

As for Clinton, who knows how much time he spend on such things, but I don't think there were any allegations he didn't spend enough time actually working. I think he was more accusable of spending too much time focused on governing thus exhausting himself.

Gravatar So what's new? Washington is the breeding ground for poor morals, lying and hypocrisy. What gets me riled is that they THEN have the nerve to lecture US about morality!

Gravatar I believe what Newt was referring to was the timeline of his well known courting of his current wife while still married to his second wife. He dated his cureent wife while his ex fought bitterly in the divorce proceedings (and was battling cancer), ala Rudy. It happens quite often.
Had he answered no, the transcript of his divorce proceeding would have been produced and he would have been called a liar.

This excuses nothing.
Don't jump on me for that. I'm trying to point out a timeline here.

Infidelity is the most heinous of crimes one human can commit on another human. If you give fully of your body and soul to another it is unconscienable for that human to betray that confidence. If I can point out my Bona Fides and moral authority in this area, I've been happily married for 23 years.
At least happily from my perspective, you'd have to ask the better half for her thoughts on the matter.

Gravatar In Newt's defense, I don't think that failing to live by the moral code one espouses necessarily makes one a hypocrite. A moral code is set of rules that govern personal conduct. These rules are based on an individual's value system. I can see how a person in a position of leadership would want to encourage those whom (s)he holds sway over to follow the rules that are based on the shared value system, even in the event of personal lapses in conduct.

Hypocracy comes in when one condemns another for violations of the moral code that he himself has violated.

Gravatar I'm even more interested in seeing just whose names are in that Washington madam's black book. How many other two bit phony baloney plastic banana good old time rock-and-rollers are in there? Probably a whole set ... a bipartisan set as well. D's and R's.

Gravatar djheru has lowered the bar to new levels.
Thank you for that prescient comment.

Does that cover every single failing mankind has ever encountered? I think it has.
Nice job dj.

Gravatar care to be a little more specific, or are you going to just dismiss the comment without supplying any counter-argument as usual?
