Thank you! I don't have a Whole Foods near me, but I'm going to try and get my body used to a smaller dinner. The holidays are gonna get me in trouble!

i know what you mean about the rice krispie treats... except for me, that would be nutella-straight-out-of-the-jar.
best diet? sleep deprivation... esp when you get the point where given the choice of dinner or a nap, you go zzzzzzz... but you aren't all that fun to be around.

I love the superfoods, and I can attest to the tastiness of the vanilla yogurt/frozen blueberry concoction you turned me on to. I do much better with a light breakfast and lunch and a bigger dinner, but everyone's body processing things differently. I think the key is balancing and being aware of how full you are and how your body reacts to different foods.

Yay! You just gave me a reason to indulge in my favore wintery pasttime: Going to Borders (or B&N) and curling up in a chair with a giant book while sipping on some nice hot coffee (with fat free creamer & splenda, because, hello? no need for the extra fatness). And I think I'll buy this book.
My only other diet secret? Spanx. Not only do they keep you tucked in all the right places, but when you wear them on Thanksgiving (as I did), eating too much is just too damn uncomfortable. Actually, it just made me more aware of the stomach-filling that I could've fallen into. But yes, love the Spanx.

The superfoods actually look easy to incorporate into my diet...I've been doing the Glycemic Index with my mom, because she's been diagnosed with Diabetes, and you'd be surprised that a lot of those foods listed are recommended by the Diabetic Living magazine for helping with blood sugar, and managing an overall healthy diet.

Ooh, I forgot a really good tip from the Superfoods book:
When buying whole wheat bread, look at the fiber content--you should have 3g of fiber per slice to be getting real whole wheat.
This has helped me out lots at the supermarket!

Hi Amy,
Real Mom says she got the bag at a Coach outlet, and it was on the special sales table. She didn't notice it, but Real Dad did, and she wound up getting it at about 60% off its original price.
She loves the bag, and she thanks you for noticing it. Also? She loved telling me the story of the bag. My family enjoys talking about fashion and beauty products. Quel surprise!

i have a few tips that have worked for me over the years, but they're not really dieting tips per se. more like guidelines...anyway, i do a few things:
1.) smaller portions.
2.) more meals, 4-5 instead of 3.
3.) i eat SLOWER. i grew up with three brothers and for the longest time, everyone would always comment on how fast i ate. (and also how much i could eat!)
4.) running. i love all kinds of exercise, but i have to say this is what keeps me slimmer. (i used to hate running, and now i'm addicted - and not just because of the slimness factor )
5.) splurging on yummy bad things every once in awhile. when i wanna have a thick cheeseburger (and eat the whole thing), i never think twice!
It was nice reading the superfoods and finding out that i love so many of them already. gonna take a look at that book this weekend. thanks!

I tried to buy the Superfoods book the other night, but B&N seemed to be all out of them... apparently you're a marketing genius, Real Girl
I was just wondering.. can we get an update on the teeth whitening experiment? Still brilliantly white? Thanks!

Hi, again, Real Girl: Thanks for the info about the bag. Every summer, when we go to the Outer Banks, I stop in at the Coach Outlet there.
Also wanted to mention that, at your recommendation, a girlfriend and I went down to Sephora's last weekend to pick up the Dirt. We both like your site, and your writing (and the Dirt). And prior to that, I visited the Body Shop (solo) to try the lip gloss. I told them all about you, left your URL with them, too.
Keep rocking on.

Thanks for the birthday greeting,
Real Daughter. I think my neck looks weird in the photo -- you'll have to post a better one another time.
Here are my hints for staying slim and healthy:
1. Always buy "low fat" and "low carb" stuff -- not "no fat" and "no carb" because they're inedible.
2. I agree with Melissa about the smaller portions -- huge difference.
3. If there are tempting sweets around, take a very small amount. That way you don't feel deprived but don't put on the pounds either.
4. When eating a sandwich, eat only one slice of bread.
5. Bialys instead of bagels! A single bagel has 350 calories without anything on it. (Or take half a bagel, or remove the inside dough).
6. Watch the alcohol intake. White wine is best -- a margarita is the equivalent of a small meal.
7. Health-wise, I've been buying organic milk, eggs, and frozen vegetables whenever possible.
8. Also in the health department, if you're not going to cook fresh veggies, buy frozen instead of canned.
9. I just joined a gym for the first time in my life (I do a lot of walking) and find that I can eat more and not gain when I go at least three times a week.
By the way, Real Grandma (my mom) has been into dieting and exercise since the 1940's!

Great post, great site! I think I'd find the small dinners rough, but love the list. I kind of feel like some hard-core vegetable eating can cancel out all manner of indulgences. A head of broccoli a day is my magic bullet/shield.
But The Muse's Spanx advice is dead on! Tight pants (or a dress that would reveal a tummy bulge) are ideal for situations where you fear overeating. You can't suck it in and binge at the same time!
