They sell this very same product at Wal-Mart and Target.
Or actually, it's the same idea. It has a 'rough' file, a white file and a grey miracle file. I love them. Also, it's v. inexpensive there.

I used to use those files about 10 years ago. I LOVED it, but I stopped when I realized that it was making my nails brittle. Your nails grow in layers so when you sand down the surface you're making them thinner. So I just used the buffer that doesn't have abrasives and got the shine I wanted. I have ridges in my nails so I could have been sanding them down too much.

Yep, what Lori said - to make it all nice and shiny, you have to file down the top layer of your nail to give it an even surface so the "silk fibery" (haha... its really just SUPERFINE graininess) side can buff it to a shine.
Granted, I love my file, but I'm careful to only use it occasionally, as you will find your nails splitting or breaking more often with repeated use.

No!! Ack, I'm sad about the prolonged use thing. I will buff less often--maybe use the abrasive buffers once a month instead of twice, and use the shiner once a week instead of every day.
But really, the effect on my nail surface has been so lovely--I especially love how it makes polish go on so flawlessly.
(Ya know, until you bash the nail into the side of a table while it's drying.)

First off, love your site and your recommendations! I am buying a Magiff kit for myself, even with the comments about repeated use... Just wanted to let you know I found it on Ebay for $5.95 (with $7.95 shipping) which is a bit cheaper than buying directly from the Magiff site.

I have a file like that, and it is truly addictive. But I tend to agree that it does weeken the nail.
But the natural shininess! Who can resist???
p.s. I'm heading to NY this weekend and will of course keep my eyes peeled for you at Sephora, C&O Bigelow, etc.

I have a cheapy version that's just the file, too. I remember the instructions saying that you could do the shine one all the time, but that you should limit use on the abrasive ones to once a week or something.

Let me guess - the outlet mall in Florida was Sawgrass? If I could marry Sawgrass I would - it's that good. I don't know what it is, but every time I have gone down there, I have found the most incredible deals of all time. Even my boyfriend, who initially was wholeheartedly opposed to spending an entire day at an outlet mall completely converted within the hour. Yay Sawgrass!
