Gravatar Welcome back! I'm not sure how I feel about the dark nail polish trend. I just don't think it fits my personality. But I do love the Essie pinks, especially my favorite, Ballet Slippers.

A good look that I had done last time I went to get a manicure was Essie's Mademoiselle layered with Essie's Allure. It's very natural and pretty.

Gravatar If you really want to reduce chipping, I suggest two thin coats (concentrate on the tips of your nails) of Stickey Base Coat from Creative Nail Design. It is sticky like the name suggests which binds your nailpolish to it. I've been using it for over 8 years now and I love it. Manicures last twice as long.

Gravatar Hi Real Girl,
I'm on the same quest as you too find stunning alternates to the vamp black! As much as I like dark nails, black is too goth. i've been into plums and browns. I bought MAC's Seadip which i can't wait to try. Not a sultry dark brown as I had hoped to find, but a dazzling warm chocolate color with shimmer nonetheless.

Gravatar Having grown up in the 80s, I find the black nails a bit too Siouxie-and-the-
Banshees for my taste.

That said, I have found a wonderful -- and reasonable! -- alternative in Sally Hansen's Diamons Strength Nail Color in Elegant Cognac. It's a deep, brownish burgundy that looks rich and velvety. And the staying power's pretty awesome, too. All this for under $5. Can't recommend it enough.

Stay fabulous, gals!
Rachel

Gravatar I'm right there with you on the dark polish thing, RG. I haven't gone to the true dark side yet, but I did get my hands on a fabulously rich deep red last weekend (it was an OPI, but I don't remember which one), and I LOVED the look of it on my nails -- this from a girl who usually just goes with clear polish on my fingers or nothing at all!
I think I might need to enhance my nailpolish collection soon enough... thanks for the recommendation!

Gravatar Hi Real Girl! Not a fan of this new black nail polish trend - the darkest I'll go is OPI's Soho Nice To Meet You. My favorite pale color is Essie's It's Delicate (wore it for my wedding day!). For base coats nothing beats Nailtique Formula #2. It keeps my polish on forever! I've converted many of my co-workers and friends too. It costs around $20 but so worth it, you should check it out!

While I'm glad you are back, I can only wish that you were delayed for another week, rooting on the Mets in the WS. Sigh....next year, right?

Gravatar Glad to see your back.
I've been hearing so much about Essie in the blog-o-sphere

Gravatar hey there!

I love the dark polish trend! I think it looks good on darker complexions. I like the color Black Cherry by Milani. It's hard sometimes to find dark nail polish, but at $3, I'm not complaining.

dark polish and red red lips....Bombshell combo!

Gravatar I bought an OPI black (Black Onyx, as part of the extremely fun, but difficult to pull off at work Ghouls Night Out kit). Haven't tried it yet, but plan to this weekend.

My favorite Essie is Fed Up. Looks a little pinker than you'd initially be seeking, but is fantastic when you get it on.

Gravatar I find it so bizarre that people would be scrambling to pay a ton of money for a limited edition nailpolish. Bag, yes. Dress, yes. These are things that you could pick out the fake ones and covet the real ones. But nail polish? Black nail polish? Who cares what brand it is? I don't get this particular namebrand fad at all. Although now I sorta want some black nail polish, a comfy sweater and some dark wash jeans.

Gravatar Hi, Real Girl! I was excited to see a trend in the celeb gossip rags that I could afford to try, so I tried an OPI grape/wine color first with short, squared nails and got lots of compliments, which emboldened me to go black on my next trip to the nail salon. (Not, alas, with Chanel's Black Satin. I'm still looking for my bottle of Vamp from the nineties so I can take this trend retro!) No compliments on the black and some strange looks from my supervisor at work, so at my fill in yesterday I switched to bright red. Now I look juuuuust like Christina Aguilera. Except I am tall. And not platinum. And no huge wardrobe of exquisite Christian Louboutin. But other than that, I am the spittin' image!

Gravatar After reading your post, I went to the store and bought some black nail polish, (Rimmel Black Satin), dug out my fav comfy sweater, and went home. I realized I didn't have a single pair of dark wash jeans, so I went to Nordstrom Rack and got some dark wash jeans and cute boots. I know that you didn't mention boots in your post, but you gotta love cute boots, right?

:P

Gravatar I gotta say, I didn't love the Chanel Black Satin--it has a hint of opalescence which I don't care for, but the formulation is excellent. Not too thick, not too thin--two coats and you're done. I second Michelle's rec for Rimmel Black Satin--perfect, great true black, but it's a bit dull, so you need a good top coat. It's just as good as Essie Licorice, but also, it's cheap, which is nice.

Re: Essie's perfect pinks, I'd reccommend Limo-scene--it's a milkier Mademoiselle, a true powder pink w/ no shimmery bits. Vanity Fairest is basically Limo-scene, but with those shimmery bits. I love the colors, but they don't work as well on my complexion since I have yellow undertones.

re: Essie's dark polishes--I double second your rec for Wicked, but my favorite in Essie's burgundy family is Sole Mate (which is discontinued, I believe). It's closer to black than burgundy, but not black enough to be scary to the conservative ladies at work.

The polish I've been working lately is OPI Fedora--a reddish black with some brown thrown in there. So hot and very "in" right now, if fashion magazines are to be believed.

Gravatar Essie's "Sugar Daddy" is my go-to polish every week at the nail salon. Last week I went with "Wicked" (to go with my halloween costume), and ... eh. I'll be back to my old standard this weekend.

Gravatar When it comes to pick I'm into OPI's Hopelessly in Love.

As for dark polishes it's got to be Revlon Vixen (the designer impostor version of Chanel Vamp). I'm a natural blonde and very fair-skinned, so black nail polish looks very harsh on me. I opted for the closest-to-black shade I could find...MAC Molasses. It's a dark, dark, brown that gives the same effect as black without being harsh or goth.

Gravatar I have discussed this issue too - black nail polish beauty or beast on my site - and it's definitely beastly for me ... Chanel Black Satin looks great on freshly manicured nails, but a deep aubergine is better like OPI Lincoln Park After Dark. And whatever dark shade you wear you have to top it off with Seche Vite to dry it quick and make it last as long as possible without chipping (my record is around three days)

Gravatar check out essie's sugar daddy! it's a great one-coat pink for us fair skinned gals.

Gravatar My favorite is Essie Vanity Fairest for a milky subtle french manicure look.

Gravatar I really like OPI's Lincoln Park After Dark. It's a really dark eggplant color that looks black when you apply enough coats.

As for top coats, Revlon has a polish that's supposed to last forever, and it comes with the color & a top coat. I use that top coat and it works great. My manicure lasts almost a full week! I can't remember the name if it though.
