This account and pictures felt much more real than canned TV coverage. Best of luck.

Outside the sports bar, are the fire and police guys sharing a doobie? Cuz it looks like it.
Riveting, as stated. Stay safe.

Rob: this reminds me abit of Nevil Shute's "On The Beach." Very well written (e.g., "like the curled up lip of a sneer"), and I appreciate your sharing this information with us. But you may have buried the lede on us: what's this about an existential crisis?

Thanks everyone.
Scott: I don't think it's a doobie but I hope it is.
PDS: That's why it's usually not a personal blog. I try to have an existential crisis every few years. This one was (mostly) irrelevant to the post, so going into detail would've been distracting.

Wow. Good work. The stories about the run-ins with the police are especially upsetting. Doesn't bode well for what will happen when the Avian Flu pandemic hits.

Rob: if you can't share the details of an occasional existential crisis with your anonymous readers and (theoretically) the entire world, who you gonna share it with?

Great post, and great pics too. I lived at Washington and Carondelet until a couple of months ago; a few years ago on Magazine and the river bend. It was good to see some of the old haunts in your photographs, even if they were caked in mud and ringed with sour water.
How completely sad. It's so good that you two went and rescued those pets. But it sounds traumatizing nonetheless.
Take care --

Rob -
Excellent post. Speaking as someone whose cats were rescued by Noah's Wish volunteers, I can appreciate your valiant efforts.
But I couldn't look at the photos. We've moved on. Too depressing to look back.
As they say "thank you for sharing."
And have ya seen my blog? http://tinyurl.com/b5hbe

I remember reading this, but I'm surprised I never commented. It was an excellent insight into post-Katrina New Orleans. Thanks.
