Don't you think the biggest step is mental?? I swear... when you look back at all of the breakthrough areas and then how fast things progressed after that, it only took one... just one, to let everyone else go, "Oh! We guess that song in 2 seconds!"

You know, I have spent the majority of my adult life in biomedical sciences, and I have never before seen a leap forward like this. It seems like these new sequencing technologies (Illumina really hit the scene big about 2.5 years ago now) represent a real inflection point in biology. I feel like I can't even imagine how the shape of biology will change in the next decade, and I am supposed to be an expert. To be able to sequence (confidently) 3 billion basepairs for $50K is mind blowing, but now I can easily imagine it being done for $1K, or even $100 in the relatively near future. Unreal.
CSI can do it in 20 seconds AND get the persons address.
Microbology type myself, the advances these days are dizzying alright. Mr. Southern Blot was working on putting primers and shit onto Microchips so that you could do CSI type stuff, for real.
But can you run a 4 minute mile?

Well- that just sounds exciting. Stuff like that makes me think of my grandfather buying his first digital watch in 1976... I remember him saying, "Digital is the future"... I loved that he could look at the future with such excitement when he was 76.
Your future as an expert will be filled with amazing things, fish... luckily they'll trickle down to us.

Everything is funnier at night. We should make a rule, no blog reading by daylight... only blog reading/commenting at night after a cocktail or two have been consumed.
I say we plan a blogging cocktail party... lined up the evening when everyone will sit by their lovely illuminated monitor with 2 or 10cocktails of their choice and then we all have at the blog chitchat.
Now that would be some scary reading come daylight. I bet the monitor screen would melt.
