Commenting on what
Rebecca Wrote

This too makes me sick. Again, I have a hrd time with boycotts, but I believe there is no other option. I feel that I should go and speak to someone directly on this matter.

On a slightly happier note I finally wrote Larry Bagnall (MP) with my thoughts. I found on the EFC website that it tells you all you need to know about your MP including E-mail addresses. I sent mine to Larry. I also cc'd Paul Martin and Steven Harper.

"Canadian Tire does not define what constitutes a family, we feel we should leave that to policy makers and the government."

Policy makers and the government defining family values. Kind of scary.

Rebecca, I think your letter to CT was well crafted! Their response is disheartening.

I was at a church breakfast this morning, where our pastor (Brent Cantelon), who met PM Martin with 11 other Cdn. religious leaders (organized by the EFC), spoke a bit about the meeting. What struck me about his comments (and I think this may be true of many who have become so vocal in support of gay marriage), was that the PM has been influenced in his views more in speaking with parents of gay and lesbian kids, than by reports or scientific data. I find this truly scary - not to mention dreading the ramifications of 'the law of unforeseen consequencs' that will undoubtedly ensue, if this bill passes.

He (and Cdn Tire) sound impressionable. We need to pray that our leaders are surrounded by modern Daniels and Josephs and Esthers.

P.S. Yes, Rebecca, that CT response was a form letter for sure. My husband got the exact same letter reply to an email he sent.

I knew it was a form letter, but I responded to it anyway. Just a couple of sentences this time, but I figure I'll keep someone busy.

I'm thinking of seeing how many form letters I can collect in my inbox.

Seriously, I'm just hoping that this issue doesn't get ignored because people think the vote in parliament is more important. Of course it is, but a strong response to Canadian Tire on this issue might be a good way to get the attention of the parliamentarians.

Hi
My letter was entirely different. They said they did not sponsor the show. The last paragraph was the same but the second paragraph is quite different. They say they did not sponsor it.

This the letter I recieved today:

Dear Kevin,

Thank you for taking the time to provide us with your feedback on Canadian Tire and the program "My Fabulous Gay Wedding". To clarify, Canadian Tire's participation in this program has been inaccurately characterized.

Canadian Tire is not a sponsor of this program. The show's producers filmed a segment of one episode in a Canadian Tire store. We did not receive compensation for use of our facilities nor did we pay any money to the producers. Canadian Tire has not funded the program or facilitated its production through any paid advertising.

We understand this is a sensitive and emotional issue for many Canadians and we thank you for providing us with your point of view. Canadian Tire does not define what constitutes a family, we feel we should leave that to policy makers, the government and to Canadian society as a whole. Canadian Tire is inclusive and wants to sell our products and services to all Canadians.

Again, thank you for taking the time to provide us with your feedback, which we will include as part of our ongoing review of Canadian Tire programs and activities. We hope that we can continue to serve you in our stores in the future.

Regards,

Canadian Tire Corporate Customer Relations

Hi Kevin,

Isn't that weird? As you see in the comments above yours, last week, people were getting exactly the same form letter I did.

You know, I suspect they may be backing away from this, but trying to look as if they aren't backing away from anything, because that might cause a stink in certain quarters, too.

I am not up to speed on what it is that Canadian Tire is or is not sponsoring re gay marriage/relationships. Please entlighten me. Yhanks.
Neil in Scarborough.

Neil,

It seems to me that they are not, but it's hard to say for certain. First they confirmed that they were sponsoring it, then they said that they never had been sponsoring it.

I suspect that they were planning to sponsor it, but they got too much negative response to that idea and withdrew their sponsorship. But they don't want to have it sound like they withdrew their sponsorship, because there are those who would be offended by that as well.

Clear as mud, right?

Hi - I am one of the freaks that actually got married on this show - You website makes me sick and the fact that you could hold so much hatred towards someone just because they are gay is even more sickening. My husband and I have been together for 7 years and are in a loving monogamous relationship. I am excited over the fact that this show is going to get HUGE ratings and that in the end your protests and letters are going to make NO difference - in fact - why dont you keep it going - all your going to do is continue to arouse interest in the show!

Rob,

If you think I hate people who are gay then you are wrong. I do think that marriage was instituted as a union between a man and a woman. Those are two separate issues.

And I don't expect letters to make any difference whether the show is shown or not. My issue isn't with the show being shown--although, to tell you the truth, I would be happier if they showed a whole lot less shows of the "reality show" genre in general--but with Canadian Tire sponsoring it.
