I wonder...what John McCain-Osama bin Laden election? Sure, it's a simple slip of the tongue, but it's the sort of thing the right would never be excused for. I know, it's not what you say or do and it's not results that matter as long as your intentions are good. And Jesse's claim that he's a Goldwater conservative? Interesting.

"That the RIGHT would never be forgiven for"? Have we been living in a parallel universe the last 8 years? Or the last 20 years, for that matter? The "Right" lied its way into a war and used torture to justify it. And the American media mostly gave them a free pass, including so-called liberal media giants like the NY Times.

I don't want to place myself in a position of arguing on GWB's behalf. In my opinion, he was a big-spending politician (one of the most extreme insults I can muster) and, to me, his "compassionate conservatism" looks a lot like old-fashioned tax and spend liberalism. That's all old news, now it's the left's turn to run things as they please and we can enjoy the result. Maybe something useful will come of it, like abolishing the stupid prohibition against drugs.

Ken, would that "the left" was actually running things. There is no left in American politics to speak of. Obama is the most centrist of politicians in most regards, and unfortunately he is not great on drug prohibition - I am totally with you on this issue.
And I realize that while the definitions of "liberal" and "conservative" have changed over the centuries, I have to say, I am really sick of hearing GWB's extremist policies described as "liberal." They were not liberal. They were radical, and not in a good way - I'm talking about his anti-Constitutional policies and disdain for the good American tradition of following the rule of law.
Spend, yeah, he sure did that. But he didn't tax, he lowered taxes on the wealthy (making the deficits even more massive), and his policies have helped accelerate the massive transfer of wealth from working and middle class Americans to the very wealthy. This Wall Street bailout, unfortunately, represents the end-game of that wealth transfer.

I have little interest in streamlining government or in making it more efficient, for I mean to reduce its size. I do not undertake to promote welfare, for I propose to extend freedom. My aim is not to pass laws, but to repeal them. It is not to inaugurate new programs, but to cancel old ones that do violence to the Constitution, or that have failed in their purpose, or that impose on the people an unwarranted financial burden.
- Barry Goldwater, The Conscience of a Conservative
I'm not sure, did Jesse say he used to be a Goldwater conservative (which might be true) or that he *is* a Goldwater conservative, which would be a lie?
