Is that spam for real...whoa. I nearly fell off my chair!
I often wonder where all the money goes...I mean do the CEOs we bail out dig a hole and stash it away or something? I thought it was supposed to go around and around but a lot of people are left out of the loop.
Oh, Japan often has similar housing "problems" ...walls not paper thin but thin enough!
I love your "rants", thank you for sharing.

Hi Lisa, I think you will 'enjoy' this BBC documentary: http://video.google.com/
videopla...172273825999151.
Begins slowly, but quite powerful.
After watching, go down to the mall and do a little shopping.

For centuries, people defined themselves by what they did and made; we define ourselves by what we buy. Lord help us.

Eric, watching it now. Wow. Thanks. I think.
I'm such a bad American, I still like to buy things based on how durable they are!

And, okay, I'll admit it. Good design. I'm a sucker for good design and functionality. Not sure which subconscious Freudian force that one hits!

The Century of Self is by the filmmaker of another must-see doc, The Power of Nightmares. In Peter Bergen's acerbic review, it's "more interesting" than Michael Moore's F911. Which is about right. Moore became his enemy in this past election cycle, falling for pro-Democratic media bias and pro-Obama caucus cheating.
Why? Because Lisa is right, nearly everyone in our culture prefers appearance over substance. We'll be screwed for a long time until, as a culture, we get our feet back under us.

Sneaking in via proxy ...
"(...) we've come to a place where the marketing and the brand have superseded the content and the idea. (...) "There's so much that's terribly wrong with this, with a business and political culture where clever marketing is used as a subterfuge, to disguise the "product" we're being sold, where the image overrides the substance."
Sing it, Sister! I couldn't agree more, this is really a serious flaw in American society, permeating and cheapening so many aspects of our lives and culture.
What to do? All I can come up with is to personally "opt out of the system" by (a) trying to lead a life that is as little "consumerist" as possible, and (b) trying to avoid contributing to the problem professionally through my career choices and work habits.
It's frustrating to feel like there is little I can do toward solving such an enormous problem, but at least I can try to avoid being part of it.

This is why I'm soooo conflicted about where Apple has gone. They've gone all in on brand over substance, when what I used to love was that they were durable and functional. Hell in 23 years, I've owned only 5 computers--all Macs. Now I fear the "cool kid" factor will encourage them to make more stylish, less durable stuff.
This morning, I listened to something about Cali's budget and just felt sick. Wondered what's going to happen when they gut the education system.

As I said above, I'm definitely a sucker for good design - but I don't think that's entirely a matter of branding over substance. I think it's actually a meaningful criteria by which to judge things - and also how well they work and how long they last. I'm still on the Mac bandwagon myself - but I think that their good design is a huge part of why they are a quality product.
What's happening in CA is very very scary, and what a lot of people don't get is that the California economy is the main engine of the American economy - if CA goes off a cliff, America will follow. It's going to make economic recovery much more difficult if CA goes belly-up. And the human consequences aren't things you can fix later. People will die because of this.

Maybe it's going to take everything falling apart before we can put it back together
I sometimes think that's what the powers that be want...as you say, shock and awe doctrine.
but in the meantime, poor and disabled people will literally die if the proposed budget cuts go through.
Such a thought only excites the powers that be even more. I wish I was joking.

This is very true.... So it makes one wonder when banks can get, over a weekend, alot more $$$ to stay afloat than CA needs, but CA is told to go scratch. Like with GM...if the entity has a human aspect , then we hear about it needs to take " personal responsibility"and a cold potato. But for Wall St, it's all cash and bonuses, nothing is asked or given in return.
