That IS scary... Unfortunately, a lot of people say that you shouldn't be afraid to give up your civil liberties if you're not "doing anything wrong." But what they don't understand is that they may not think that they're doing something wrong, but they may be singled out based on criteria they're not about.
I'd never seen the Six Lesson Schoolteacher essay before. My mom's a h.s. teacher in Dallas and her attitude toward the students is, unfortunately, much like the quote you include. The system's not set up to accomodate anything else.
