I don't understand why communities today can't be built with a little thought - groups of homes built around a common park area, with shops within walking distance, streets with bikes lanes, plenty of sidewalks, and public transport. Really, how hard could it be?


You're right. I think it's that Americans (at least outside of the most densely populated cities) are so car-centric. People just assume that's the way it has to be. Perhaps that's because most of our cities grew along with the growth of auto use? Older cities (and older parts of younger cities) built before widespread auto are put together on a much more human scale.
