I hate those things. Fortunately, we're too poor in my neck of the woods to see too many of the Hummers, although there's a lot of SUVs.
One thing that's happening is the car dealers are kind of dumping those big old cars. The cousin of a friend of mine was able to buy one by borrowing $50 to put in a bank account. ?? Those dealers and manufacturers know their day is coming, so they're just trying to get rid of them.
Sorry about your neighbor's daughter. :-(

I'd wondered if they would start dumping them. My little brother got a Suburban at auction for a pittance. (He uses it to haul band members and gear, but it's still an indulgence.)
My aunt is thinking of offloading her king cab ranch truck for a Prius. I'm keeping my claws crossed.

They *do* care about safety. After all, tests show that an SUV driver has much better odds of walking away from an accident than the driver of an economical car (even full-sized).
Of course, the driver of that car has much *worse* odds when it tangles with the SUV.
I've actually heard people tout that stat as a reason to drive them: "because *I* will be safer if I get in an accident."
So see...they DO care about safety. Just not yours.
