Funny you say that - eight was the age when I started doing my own laundry! With supervision and lots of mistakes, but I caught on. And stopped leaving chapstick in my pockets.

W/r/t laundry, leave ironing for later. I still bear a scar on my knee from where I thought that I could iron pants on a flatboard placed on the bed, while bouncing on the bed. (I guess I was slow to reason.)

Glad he had a wonderful birthday (with bonus side effects for you!)! At around that age, my little brother also suddenly got a rush of maturity - because he decided that what he wanted to be when he grew up was "a teenager," and he was (oddly) convinced that to be a teenager, one must act very mature. He did, too, for at least six months!
