In Kansas, we call them Purple Poppymallow. I like "Wine Cup" better! Will see if we can get it to catch on here.

I read somewhere that their roots were eaten by Native Americans, but I've never tried this myself. They are tuberous.

Not sure if my earlier one posted... not used to haloscan... but loved your flowers and miss those I planted in Texas (or loved along the road, like the bluebonnets).
Cheers.

Wondering what part of Texas. I have family in Austin that I will be visiting next April. I am a flower fan and I would like to know if they grow in that area? Thanks for sharing the picture!

Kasey, wine cups do grow in Austin, although they seem more prevalent on the roadsides the farther south you go, say toward San Antonio, Victoria, etc.

April is the peak time for wildflower watching in Austin and central Tx -- there are scenic drives listed on the Dept. of Transportation website in the spring, and there's always the highly recommended Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center in So. Austin.
