I don't mind the vinegar and use it liberally, but I am also a hippie-at-heart who has found that eco-friendly cleaning products generally suck.
I was listening to NPR yesterday about a county in Washington state that banned high phosphate cleaning products. The ban led to a thriving "black market" in people buying such products across the county line and "smuggling" them back in, for the same reason we dumped the green cleaners. NPR even spoke to a sheriff or sheriff's deputy who does not smuggle, but does use products her kin buys for her and said she would not pursue anyone who smuggled, because her dishes and laundry "looked like crap".

Excellent!
Hmm, I wonder if I can use that 5 year old bottle of Pisco to the same effect?

Neat-o! Big Daddy has some funky smellin' Keens that may need to be doused with this concoction! And I agree, I wouldn't drink the stuff, but if it cleans, right on Sista! Thanks for head's up!

Half water? Why not just go straight vodka and get things twice as clean? ;^)

I've been trying to keep up denial about the sucktitude that are green cleaners, but dammit, you've gone and ripped that scab off!
I'll have to try the vodka - lawd knows it has to smell better than working with vinegar.

Per my next-youngest brother, if you put that vodka through a Brita filter about ten times, you could drink it, too.

Seems like there was a Mythbusters episode on something similar - but I think it was using vodka to clean your breath instead of mouthwash!

This makes me so happy. I could ditto all your observations (especially the waxy build-up of eco-guilt). Now I'm trying to figure out which grimy area to attack first. There are so many to choose from...
This also makes me laugh as I remember the time I cleaned the kitchen floor with white vinegar and a friend came through and said it smelled like a douche. Sort of took the shine off for me.

I dunno. It's a long way to a liquor store through dry territory and I already bought a gallon bottle of white vinegar that I haven't used yet. Use it? You mean you have to USE it?

Okay, here is my tip on soap scum, but first, I have hard Michigan water with lots of lime, so take that into account. YMMV and c.
I clean both the tub and the bathroom sink with a little bit of Suave shampoo and a green scrubby pad.
(Afterwards I close the sink stopper and sorry! I do put just a tiny bit of vinegar in the bottom of the sink to get the lime off the chrome.)
I've used the vodka spray on my Society for Creative Anachronism gowns. A lot of our local SCA people are theater people who use this on costumes that can't be laundered for one reason or another. Isn't it great?

That's awesome.
I used to use vinegar (with orange oil in it to soften the stink) to get rid of the baking soda grime. But I think borax works better than baking soda anyway, and doesn't leave the grime, so now I use that. I'm definitely going to try vodka for the kitchen, though.

I use borax and dr. bronner on about everything, salt to scrub around the faucets and it seems to work fine - my standards may be low though. Looking forward to trying the vodka though - finally get rid of that half bottle of absolut that's been hanging around for 5 years. Wouldn't drink it on a bet.

as a professional costumer, most theatres i have worked at prefer to use vodka as a deodorizer. it is superior to its closest commercial competitor Febreeze: better, cheaper, and hypoallergenic.
i've not heard of it as a general or stain cleaner, though -- my favorite cleaning product is Simple Green, an all-purpose that works on kitchen, bathroom, and laundry [although i don't use it on whites; it is actually green].
p.s. the Mythbusters did do an experiment with vodka as a cleaner/deodorizer. They concluded that it did not work, but they used a different application method than i'm used to [in a spray bottle, diluted with water].

This is hands-down one of the best internet tips I've ever seen. Wonder if it works on stinky dog rugs? Or stinky dogs ;o)

Here's a cheap, eco-friendly cleaner that I use for bathroom and kitchen.
1/2 cup of hydrogen peroxide
1/2 cup of alcohol (rubbing is fine)
1 capful Jet-Dri
7-8 drops of liquid dishwashing detergent
I use a 28-32 oz bottle. Pour in the peroxide, alcohol and Jet-Dri. Add water almost to the top. Then, add the 7-8 drops of detergent.
Spray on tiles, sinks, showers, tubs, etc. (I even spray my tile floor) thoroughly. WALK AWAY. The solution will do the job and dry. I do this every 4-5 days and have the cleanest, shiniest surfaces. Initially if you haven't cleaned the surfaces, you might have streaks but after a few treatments, it will shine.

I use it on my costumes, but hadn't thought to use it elsewhere! Philip received a free bottle of grape vodka. We don't drink it, so it's just sitting in the dining room... I wonder if I can clean with it. Will it just grape-scent my toilet?
I don't see that as a problem...

Did you know you can also make your own vanilla extract using vodka?
http://www.joythebaker.com/blog/...anilla-extract/
3 vanilla beans per cup of alcohol... I think WM has a tiny bottle with 2 beans for around $8... magadascar beans...
Takes a couple of months, might be fun to do, though! (We'd have to go up to Nocona or over to Gainesville to get some...)
