Congratulations, KCB! Your baby is growing up and you have your body to yourself again.

Before my youngest finally weaned himself at age 4, I'd begun to think I might end up as one of the only women ever to reach perimenopause and still be breastfeeding.

Yeah, I nursed my son until he was two-and-a-bit. One day I was in the bathtub, and he pushed the shower curtain aside and looked at my chest. "No more milk," he said.

I was getting all ready to tear up, and then he said something else:

"I got it all."

Wow. What a mature attitude. I like it!

KCB, you didn't suffer all those bad weaning stories because you weaned gradually. Congrats! All those emotional and physical horror stories are the result of abrupt weaning.

Katharine, I'm nursing and in perimenopause. Sigh. I guess it does happen.

Redneck mother, I am over here with tears in my eyes...your hormones may be stable but mine, not so much. This is one of the most beautiful posts I have read in so long. I think you should consider submitting it to a periodical or two so that more people can read it. Seriously.

Don't worry about the shrivel...nothing a good bra can't fix. But be sure to enjoy them right now because, honey, I'm here to tell you they just keep on moving south.

Weaning my kid involved me looking at him (almost 2 and a half at the time) and saying "there's no more milk in there, can we do something else?"He responded by snuggling up next to me and falling asleep. Way easier than potty training or any other young toddler step.

He's almost 13 now. i don't ever miss breastfeeding but I do miss problems that could be solved that easily.

You don't always shrivel

My youngest, turned seven last weekend, weaned himself just about exactly three years ago. He told me a week before his fourth birthday that he was going to quit when he turned four because "That's what big boys do". And darned if the kid didn't stick to his word.

It was bittersweet for me too because I have three kids after six pregnancies. Davy is the last, so it was definitely a milestone. He handled it better than I did.
