What a cool looking trip.
I don't think your boys are old enough for the graphic stuff, but I used to love telling my the college students in my archaeology class about Mayan bloodletting ceremonies. The ruling men got to perforate their penises with a stingray spine (or an artifial jadeite one), women pulled maguey thorn ropes through their tongues, and then the paper used to catch the blood was ceremonially burned. Hallucinations often occured, perhaps with the aid of tobacco juice enemas.

Wow. I am really impressed with how much they have done at Dzibi. At the time I was there with the cute archaeologist - how cool of a date is that, hitchhiking to and then wandering around a deserted site - we talked about how it was one of the biggest (area wise) but least cared for sites in the Yucatan. That's such a beautiful part of the country. I'm so glad you and your little ones had a good time!
