Hurricane Hugo was the worst. Evil Dad and I sat up all night listening to things crash all around us. At one point, we thought the roof was going to fall in.

We also got a great view of the neighbor's house after a power line fell on their back porch roof. Yep, we've had some storms since, and even a few blizzards, but nothing like that.

Oh, and thank you, Hombre.

There have been more than a couple!

When I lived with my parents back in the 80's, lightning hit a cottonwood maybe 40 yards from the house. I woke up sitting up in bed with my fluorescent desk lamp glowing. My mom's sewing machine motor, an electric stove burner, and many other things were fried. (I don't think they even HAD a computer yet.)

About 5 years ago we woke up to a violent storm and a smell of burning. Lightning had struck close enough that electricity had arced between the metal case of one computer and the metal desk side about half an inch away, leaving a mark like a cigarette-burn on both. That CPU still sort-of works, but shuts down randomly. Lost a printer to that one, too.

Then there was the time it hit the electric pole down the road and completely blew it to pieces all over the road and into the cornfield. . .

Anyway: lightning: gigavolts (bolts?) can blow right through a surge suppressor. Contact them. Often they will pay for repair or replacement of zapped stuff, depending on the manufacturer.

Electricity bothers me, generally. In 1980 I was visiting friends in New Hampshire when a thunderstorm went through. The friends' house was thoroughly wired/grounded, which was a good thing because it got hit repeatedly! After the fourth or fifth strike I almost started to get used to it. I have never experienced anything else like it.
