Ha Ha Ha "ceremony malfunctions", great article - I like her literary name too.

Back in the stone ages when we graduated high school, we did the beachball & bikini thing, and also put a lab mouse into a little RC plane and flew it around the crowd. They started withholding diplomas the following year. :P

Don't give those chiggers any drinks. As Kliban once wisely put it, "Chiggers can't be boozers."
Sounds like you are having a mellow summer, vermin aside.

I'm glad that there is at least one other homeschooler on this continent that is baffled by the whole summer break thing. I actually feel like we're ramping up the learning.
And do you have any suggestions for a kid who will wear neither bug repellant nor long pants in the summer?

Very short fingernails and a lot of anti-itch cream, JoVE.
Or you could tell her the cautionary tale of the summer I turned 8 and spent a week at a mosquito-infested campsite in NM, refusing to wear jeans or repellant. Between the scabbed-over bites and the time in the sun, by summer's end I had polka-dotted legs. It took the discoloration a year to even out. Bleah.

You know, in the 26 years since I graduated high school, no one has ever asked to see my high school diploma. Not ever. Not once.
This is good, because I don't know where I left it.
In light of that, though, I'm not sure I'd bother going to pick mine up were I one of the Dripping Springs beach ball offenders.
Meanwhile, though I have no advice on pants/repellent problems, I can go you one better on the polka dot front. Picking a scab that formed on a mosquito bite I'd cut shaving my legs when I was 16 is how I first developed melanoma. Melanoma is why I am one-legged now.
Picking. From my perspective, you might as well smoke. Of course, I did that, too, later on, after I already had cancer. And overexposure to chlordane that summer may also have played a part in my getting it. Still, not picking is a better choice if one can make it, and now you have a really scary story to tell about why. (Might not work on pirate fans, of course.)
On a happier albeit completely unrelated note, I opened a screen to let a big bee out of my studio yesterday, and there were bees in my irises before the thunderstorm this afternoon.
