I used to wonder if Calvert & crew *knew* they were getting it wrong in regards to evolution vs "origins" (abiogenesis), and were just intentionally being deceitful, or if they were genuinely ignorant.
Any more, I realize that's a bit like asking the bull whether he *knows* he shouldn't be in the china shop or not.
Whether he does, or doesn't, it ain't gonna make any difference to the china, or the bull.
And, in a sense, it's not really the bull's fault. That's just his nature. Same thing with Calvert & crew: It doesn't matter whether they are lying, or ignorant, either way...they are harmful to education.
The *REAL* culprit(s) in my mind are the store owners/managers. The folks who left the door open, and let the bull in.
In case there is any doubt, I am referring to Steve Abrams, Kathy Martin, and Connie Morris. These people are simply in the wrong line of work, and it's going to be up to the stockholders in the company (that'd be us voters) to take care of that problem.
The problem in this china shop ain't the bull, it's bad management.

Additionally, teachers should be required to play the theme from the "Twilight Zone" during "origins" discussions.

Do they really expect these kids to be able to understand the biochemistry behind some of the metabolic pathways involved -all that stuff about NADH and redox potential and proton pumps and electron flow? What about reducing vs oxidizing atnospheres and fermenting vs O2 respiration in bacteria and how each came about? If they can't understand that how can they how can they come to any rational or logical decision? If you don't have the knowledge to evaluate an argument or criticism the only thing you can do is accept it based on faith.

"Do they really expect these kids to be able to understand the biochemistry behind some of the metabolic pathways involved . . .?"
Probably not. I suspect that's the point. Even if it isn't, it really speaks to the vast gulf between these two ways of thinking about the world, and why these guys shouldn't be all that involved in science ed . . .
Playing the twilight zone theme - wonderful!
"You're traveling through another dimension, a dimension not only of sight and sound but of mind. A journey into a wondrous land whose boundaries are that of imagination. That's the signpost up ahead— your next stop, the ID Zone . . .
